Avinash Tiwary on Handling Family Career Questions: "Shouting Doesn't Change Anything

The Mehta Boys marks Boman Irani's first time in the director's chair, telling the tale of a father and son who clash but end up having to bond under unexpected situations. Boman Irani and Avinash Tiwary play the lead roles. Before the film hits theaters, Tiwary chats with HT about how he connected with the story and what inspired his emotional performance.

Avinash Tiwary talks about how relatable The Mehta Boys are

Avinash mentions that the film's relatable themes and realistic backdrop made his role tougher, as some of the feelings he had to portray were quite intense. "It hit closer to home for me, and I really got it on a deeper level. The interesting part is that even though I felt I understood it, actually confronting those feelings was pretty uncomfortable," he explains. "It's all very intimate. If it were purely fantasy, there would be some distance, and I could put up a barrier. But when it’s relatable, it gets a lot more uncomfortable."

Boman shared with an online media that he based the father-son dynamic on real-life experiences, even if they weren't directly from his own life. He said, "I conducted a ton of interviews. I can't name names, but we all tend to play the role of backseat drivers, and I've pulled from a lot of personal stories."

Avinash talks about using his 'annoying' personal experiences as inspiration for his art

Avinash found some similarities in his own experiences. In the film, there's a scene where the dad downplays his son's dream of being an architect. Avinash relates to that, saying he's faced similar situations with his own family. "You try to sit down and explain things, hoping they'll get it. But by the second time, you realize your words aren't landing. By the third time, you're yelling, but nothing shifts," he chuckles. "The funny part is, it probably won't change. I really think they mean well and want to look out for you, but it can be super frustrating," he admits.

The actor shares that he frequently faces curious questions about his career when he's at home. "This morning, we were all hanging out, and during our chat, he started asking me, 'What's your next project?' After about five questions, I thought, 'Oh no, not this again.' I tried to change the subject by turning away, but that didn’t work. So, before I lose my cool, I just got up and started talking to someone else," he laughs. He also mentions that he can handle it because he knows the questions come from a caring place, not from any bad intentions. "I see where they're coming from. That helps me keep things in perspective and figure out how to navigate those moments," he wraps up.

The Mehta Boys features Boman Irani, Avinash Tiwary, Shreya Chaudhry, and Puja Sarup. The film is set to premiere on Amazon Prime Video on February 7.
