Actor Aubrey Plaza made an unexpected appearance at the 50th anniversary special of Saturday Night Live on Sunday, marking her first public engagement since the passing of her husband, Jeff Baena.
Aubrey Plaza makes first public appearance
Previously, Aubrey had hosted Saturday Night Live (SNL) two years prior, but on this occasion, she took the stage to introduce a musical performance featuring Miley Cyrus and Brittany Howard. This event represented her first public outing following Jeff's death, and she had also opted out of attending the Golden Globe Awards, where she was slated to present.
Aubrey did not walk the red carpet prior to the event. She was attired in black dress pants and a black blazer, complemented by a simple t-shirt underneath.
As reported by Deadline, her choice to wear a tie-dye shirt may have served as a subtle homage to her late husband.
“Jeff became quite passionate about tie-dyeing during the quarantine. Therefore, I decided that Jeff and I would wear tie-dye pajamas that he had created for us (during our wedding),” Aubrey shared in a 2021 interview on The Drew Barrymore Show regarding their nuptials.
During SNL50, Miley, along with Brittany and The Roots, performed "Nothing Compares 2 U," a song that gained fame through the late Sinéad O’Connor.
More about Jeff’s death
In January, Jeff was discovered deceased at a residence in Los Angeles. Medical examiner records reviewed by Us Weekly indicate that the official cause of death is classified as suicide. There were no additional causes or suspicious circumstances noted in relation to Jeff's demise. The couple had been in a relationship for over ten years before they entered into a private marriage in 2020. They did not have any children together.
Aubrey publicly addressed the situation three days following her husband's death through a statement released by the family. "This is an unimaginable tragedy. We are profoundly thankful to all who have provided support. We kindly ask for privacy during this difficult time," the statement shared with The Post stated.
Jeff Baena was born and raised in Miami. He subsequently attended film school at New York University and relocated to Los Angeles shortly after graduation to pursue a career in the entertainment industry. He gained recognition for co-writing the 2004 independent film I Heart Huckabees, which featured actors such as Jude Law, Mark Wahlberg, and Naomi Watts.
