Atlanta rapper DJ Unk has passed away at the age of 43. Born Anthony Leonard Platt, this hip-hop figure was renowned for his iconic 2006 tracks “Walk It Out” and “2 Step.” The cause of his death has not yet been disclosed. Fans may recall his performance at the 2023 BET Awards, where he showcased “Walk It Out” in a medley alongside Soulja Boy and F.L.Y.
The heartbreaking news was confirmed by several family members on Friday. His wife, Sherkita Long-Platt, expressed her grief on Facebook, stating, “Please respect me and my family. I just lost my husband and my kids just lost their father. Our life will never be the same. I LOVE YOU ANTHONY FOREVER.”
Atlanta rapper's former label pays tribute
A representative from Platt's previous label, Big Oomp Records, which he joined in 2000, has also confirmed the heartbreaking news of the rapper's death via social media. “It is with deep sorrow and immense sadness that we announce the passing of a true ATL icon, Anthony Platt, better known as ‘DJ Unk,’” stated the agency on their Instagram Stories. “DJ Unk was not only a legendary DJ, rapper, and producer, but also a fundamental part of our label, and the impact he made worldwide will be treasured eternally.”
The statement further acknowledged the enduring influence of his notable tracks. “Hit songs like ‘Walk It Out’ and ‘2 Step’ have made a lasting impression on the industry, and his legacy will continue to motivate artists, DJs, and fans for many years to come. His vibrant energy, creativity, and dedication to his craft will always be remembered.”
Big Oomp expressed, “We kindly request that you keep his family in your thoughts and prayers during this challenging period. We also extend our gratitude to all who have supported DJ Unk and the Oomp Camp throughout the years. Rest in peace, Unk. You will be profoundly missed.”
Emerging in the late 1990s, the artist established Southern Style DJs alongside DJ Montay and DJ Kelly. As a solo artist, DJ Unk became a trailblazer in snap music, a subgenre of crunk that gained significant mainstream attention in the mid-2000s, according to Variety. He is particularly recognized for his hits “Walk It Out” and “2 Step,” with Anthony Platt achieving remarkable success, reaching No. 2 with the former and No. 4 with the latter on the Billboard Hot Rap Songs Chart.
DJ Unk previously suffered a heart attack
Although the preliminary reports have not disclosed Unk's cause of death, it is already established that he experienced a heart attack in 2009. Platt attributed this medical issue to a detrimental mix of relentless touring, poor dietary choices, and habits of drinking and smoking.
“Inactivity and improper nutrition are contributing factors,” he candidly stated in a 2010 interview with XXL Magazine. “Essentially, I work diligently every day. I strive to achieve something for my family daily. I am perpetually on the move, frequently travelling by aeroplane and facing various weather conditions, which ultimately took a toll on my health. It was stress.”
