As Mohanlal and Prithviraj Sukumaran's L2: Empuraan continues to perform well at the box office, it has sparked controversy regarding its portrayal of the purported Gujarat riots. In light of this, well-known Malayalam actor Asif Ali has expressed his support for the film, encouraging audiences to view it solely as a form of entertainment.
Asif Ali on L2 Empuraan controversy
In response to the ongoing controversy, Asif Ali remarked, “A film lasting three hours should be regarded solely as a form of entertainment. It is our responsibility to determine the extent of a film's impact. This choice should rest with us. Whether it pertains to cinema or our environment, we possess the ability to select what affects us... Individuals who are afraid to voice their thoughts publicly often resort to throwing stones while remaining anonymous, and social media serves as a modern equivalent of that,” as reported by Mathrubhumi.

Mohanlal has also expressed his regret through a Facebook post, stating, "I have come to understand that certain political and social themes present in the film Empuraan, the sequel to the Lucifer franchise, have caused significant emotional turmoil for some of my supporters. As an artist, I feel it is my responsibility to ensure that none of my films incite animosity towards any political movement, ideology, or religious community."
"Consequently, the team behind Empuraan and I deeply regret the emotional distress experienced by my loved ones. Acknowledging that the responsibility for this rests with all of us involved in the film, we have collectively decided to eliminate those scenes," he continued.
