15 Years of Udaan: Motwane Reflects on Success, Struggles, and Growth
2 months ago | 5 Views
Vikramaditya Motwane significantly contributed to the cinematic landscape with his film Udaan, featuring Rajat Barmecha, Ronit Roy, and Ram Kapoor in prominent roles. Released in 2010, this film has become one of the most esteemed works of art in the nation. Although it did not achieve immediate acclaim upon its release, it took time for viewers to appreciate the profound narrative of a young man navigating his aspirations while contending with the oppressive expectations of his strict father, who similarly burdens his younger son. This year marks the 15th anniversary of both the film and Motwane's career as a director. In an exclusive interview with OTTplay, he and co-writer Satyanshu Singh reflected on their experiences and any regrets they may have encountered. Their insights were both profound and motivating.
Vikramaditya Motwane Talks About 15 Years Since Udaan
For those unfamiliar, Udaan was co-written by Vikramaditya Motwane and Anurag Kashyap, with contributions from Satyanshu and Devanshu Singh in the form of poems and stories for the character Rohan. The collaborative effort resulted in one of the most beloved films of our era, warranting celebration. During our exclusive discussion, Motwane recounted how the affection for his debut film created a significant pressure that influenced his subsequent project, Lootera, featuring Ranveer Singh and Sonakshi Sinha. Meanwhile, Satyanshu shared his thoughts on the importance of professional regrets.
Both Motwane and Satyanshu have reunited for Black Warrant, currently available on Netflix. In a conversation with the OTTplay team, they elaborated on their artistic journeys. Reflecting on the 15 years since Udaan, Vikramaditya stated, “I believe that everything is either a mistake or nothing is a mistake. There are no mistakes. Each experience is a step toward understanding oneself. The pressure I experienced after Udaan was tremendous—it was such a beloved film. Then I was working on Lootera, with Sonakshi and Ranveer, who had just achieved success with Dabangg and Band Baaja Baaraat.”
I had a group of talented individuals and was in the process of creating an art film. The pressure became overwhelming at that time; however, it has taken me several years to understand that one cannot bear the weight of past projects—progress is essential. Errors are a natural part of the process. For me, the most significant lesson has been the acceptance of mistakes. If an error occurs, it is acceptable; one learns from it and avoids repeating it. While I can identify aspects I might have approached differently, none of these thoughts disturb my peace at night. Each experience is merely a step forward, he remarked.
Satyanshu Singh on Regrets
In contrast, Satyanshu Singh presented a thought-provoking view on professional regrets, asserting their importance for personal development. He stated, “The feeling that you could have performed better should always be present. If that feeling is absent, it may indicate a decline in your integrity as an artist. Regret is an essential aspect of life, akin to the process of aging. Nevertheless, I do not fixate on what I could have accomplished differently in my career, as I have been fortunate enough to receive so much that I hardly have time to reflect on gratitude, let alone on regrets.”
He elaborated, “My regrets tend to be more personal in nature. If I have acted inappropriately towards someone or have been so absorbed in my work that I overlooked my family, those are the regrets I carry. My concern lies with my conduct. Was my behavior suitable? Regret related to work is unavoidable and should be acknowledged.”
Both Udaan and Black Warrant are currently available for streaming on Netflix. Please stay connected with Mobile Masala for further updates on this and other developments in the realm of streaming and cinema.
