The Babbar family has recently found itself at the centre of controversy, fueled by rumours of a dispute between Prateik Babbar and his father, actor-politician Raj Babbar. The speculation intensified when Prateik opted not to invite his father to his wedding with Priya Banerjee. Additionally, Prateik's choice to abandon his father's surname in favour of his late mother's, adopting the name Prateik Smita Patil, has further stirred the situation. In response to the ongoing discussions, Prateik's half-brother Aarya Babbar has commented that one cannot simply discard their identity.

On Prateik Babbar changing his surname

Regarding Prateik Babbar's surname change, he recently shared in an interview that he has adopted the name 'Prateik Smita Patil.' He expressed, “I am unconcerned about the consequences. What matters to me is how I feel when I hear that name. I want to be entirely associated with my mother (Smita Patil), her name, and her legacy. I believe no other name should overshadow that legacy if you understand my point. It should solely represent her name and her legacy. That is my aspiration. I aim to emulate my mother, not my father.”

In response to Prateik's decision to change his surname, Aarya stated, “I must emphasize that Smita ma is our mother as well. The name he chooses to keep or discard is entirely his decision.”

He further elaborated, “If tomorrow I decide to change my name from Aarya Babbar to just Aarya, or even Rajesh, I will still remain a Babbar, won't I?” 

Aarya concluded, “You can alter your name, but you cannot change your identity. I will always be a Babbar because that is my essence; how can you change that?”

On Prateik’s claims about things being complicated

In a recent interview, Prateik admitted that the situation is quite complex and stated that he will discuss it publicly when he feels emotionally ready.

Regarding the notion of complexity, Aarya commented, “That’s perfectly fine. The young man is processing it in his own way. I have already expressed everything I needed to say on the matter.”

On the topic of the media attention surrounding family disputes, Aarya appears unaffected by the public scrutiny of his family's challenges.

“We are a family in the spotlight, so people will inevitably have opinions. We cannot control that. We must accept it. Such occurrences are part of being in this industry. Ultimately, we are considered public figures,” the actor, who is also pursuing a career in comedy alongside acting, stated.

When asked if he believes family matters should be handled privately instead of being exposed to public scrutiny, Aarya Babbar replied, “It’s alright. It’s a part of life. We can’t change it. One shouldn’t dwell too much on these matters. There’s only one life; live it and enjoy it to the fullest.”

Regarding family dynamics, tensions became apparent when Prateik married Priya Banerjee on February 14 without inviting the Babbar family to the ceremony. Raj Babbar first married Nadira Babbar in 1975, with whom he has two children, Juhi Babbar and Aarya Babbar. He later married Smita Patil in 1983, welcoming their son, Prateik Babbar, in 1986. Tragically, Smita passed away later that year due to complications during childbirth. Raj and Nadira eventually reconciled a few years afterwards.
