A poster featuring Jagathy Sreekumar as Uncle Lunar from Arun Chandu’s Vala has got fans buzzing with excitement across all age groups. The fact that Jagathy, who has been away from the screen for quite a while, is making a comeback is already thrilling, but the twist of him starring in a sci-fi film directed by a young filmmaker just adds to the hype.
In a recent chat with Maneesh Narayanan from Cue Studio, Arun Chandu, the director of Gaganachari, shared his thoughts on casting Jagathy in a role that truly honors his legacy as one of the finest comedy and character actors in Malayalam cinema.
Arun Chandu talking about Jagathy
Arun Chandu showed that Malayalam cinema can dive into sci-fi with Gaganachari, setting it in a post-apocalyptic Kerala. Now, he's keeping the sci-fi vibe going with his new project, Vala, where Jagathy Sreekumar will play Professor Ambili, also known as Uncle Lunar.

Arun Chandu mentioned that they considered including Jagathy in his 2024 film Gaganachari, which features Anarkali Marikar, Gokul Suresh, and Aju Varghese. However, it didn’t work out due to the actor's health issues at that time, as they didn’t want to depict him in a sad state.
In Gaganachari, they paid homage to Jagathy by referencing Ikru, a character he portrayed in Pidakkozhi Koovunna Noottandu. The young director noted that this role is one of the most relatable for kids who grew up in the 90s.
For those who might not know, Jagathy suffered serious injuries in an accident back in 2012, which kept him out of the public eye. He made a brief comeback in Mammootty's CBI 5: The Brain in 2022.

Jagathy in Vala
Arun Chandu shared his thoughts on Jagathy's role as Uncle Lunar in Vala, saying, "He was like a rockstar, and we want him to bring that same rockstar vibe whenever he appears on screen."
He added, "Given his current situation, he can totally pull off a mastermind role, kind of like Stephen Hawking... Someone who could spark a zombie apocalypse, that's the vibe we're going for."
Chandu also mentioned that even though Vala is set in a futuristic 2060s Kerala, it will still have a humorous touch with down-to-earth, relatable characters.
