Arjun Kapoor discussed the challenges and negativity he has encountered during his career, which began in 2012 with the film Ishaqzaade. In a conversation with Raj Shamani on the podcast Figuring Out, Arjun reflected on the difficulties and criticism he has experienced, asserting that there were individuals who wished for his failure.
Arjun Kapoor on facing negativity
Arjun was inquired about the considerable pressure associated with his role in Singham Again, alongside prominent stars such as Ajay Devgn, Kareena Kapoor, Deepika Padukone, and Ranveer Singh. He expressed, “I experienced great joy when Rohit sir informed me that people were beginning to discuss my involvement and acknowledge my contribution to the film. It was a dignified moment, particularly because, for an extended period, some wished for my failure. By 'those,' I refer to individuals who are somewhat critical, engage in clickbait, and are inclined to trolling—they perceived me as an easy target.”
Furthermore, Arjun asserted that many of the reactions he received were influenced by his ‘surname, personal life,’ and the underperformance of ‘some of his films’ at the box office. “The prevailing perception was that I lacked enthusiasm for my work, showed no interest in improving, and was unworthy of being an actor. This notion was exacerbated by the physical challenges I encountered during a crucial phase of my career, which were rooted in health issues I have only recently begun to discuss. I recognized how this narrative facilitated the ease with which people could criticize me.”
The actor also addressed, during the podcast, how a particularly harsh review of Kuttey made him feel as though he was being ‘personally attacked.’ “I hold reviews in high regard, but I do not condone personal attacks,” he stated.
Recent work
Arjun has faced significant challenges over the past few years, as the majority of his films have struggled to achieve success both commercially and critically. Productions such as Sardar Ka Grandson and Bhoot Police in 2021, Ek Villain Returns in 2022, and Kuttey and The Lady Killer in 2023 garnered only moderate reactions upon their release. However, he has managed to stage a form of resurgence this year by portraying the antagonist Danger Lanka in Rohit Shetty’s Singham Again.
