Aparna Sen elaborates on her stand on the Federation

The conflict between the Federation of Cine Technicians and Workers of Eastern India and the other stakeholders of the Bengali entertainment industry has intensified. Aparna Sen recently questioned the legitimacy of Swarup Biswas being the president of the Federation. Later, the actress-director expressed her concern.
Aparna Sen questioned if Swarup has ever been involved in film projects. “Some letters by the Federation came out on Saturday. I had some questions which I shared on social media. Then I saw the post went viral," she told Anandabazar Online.
While replying to the questions posed to her, Aparna Sen said, “The person who overlooks a film’s production keeps contact with the Federation. As per my contract with the producers, I supervised only the creative side of the films. I never produced a film and hence there was no need to think about that side of the Federation. Sometimes the production said that I had to take two more assistants. Most of the time, the production appointed them and did not bother me. I worked without a headache with my assistants.”
She further added, “It has been many years since I did the budget of my films. I only tell them about how many days the shooting will need, who the DoP, editor, art, and music directors will be, which actors will be needed in which role, and whether some special machines or lights will be needed. Then I concentrate on shot divisions, recce, actors’ workshops, etc. Whenever I wanted to say something, the producers assured me, 'You don’t need to bother about those, Didi. You make the film with full concentration”. I don’t make films every year so I have to worry about these things.”
Aparna Sen admitted that she heard about the ongoing conflict between the Federation and the Directors’ Guild. “I saw some Facebook posts. No one from the directors told me anything. Recently I came to know about the hairstylist’s attempt to suicide and the history behind it from the members of WFSW+, like Sudipta, Bidipta, Chaiti, Ananya, and Sabarni. Then yesterday a director forwarded a Facebook post by the directors’ organization. I read it and raised some logical questions," she said.
