Many regard Dev D as one of the finest creations of director Anurag Kashyap. This contemporary reinterpretation of the classic novel Devdas featured Abhay Deol, Mahie Gill, and Kalki Koechlin in prominent roles. In a conversation with The Hollywood Reporter India, Anurag disclosed that his close associate in the film industry, Vikramaditya Motwane, was not fond of the film, and his harsh critique left Anurag in tears on the day of the premiere.

What Anurag said

Anurag recounted the events of the premiere day, stating, "I cried like a child. During the premiere of Dev D, the first review was released, awarding the film five stars. We had numerous disagreements regarding Dev D, as he had only contributed the initial draft. I modified his draft, and he despised the ending. Upon reading the first review, I eagerly called him to share the news. He responded, ‘Shove those five stars up your a**; the film could have been better.’ I began to cry, sobbing at the premiere. Everyone around me was bewildered, asking, ‘What happened to you?’”

On how Gangs of Wasseypur was made

Vikramaditya's significant influence. He remarked, “Wasseypur would not have existed without him. I was grappling with a seven-hour film. When you are creating a film, it feels like your child, and you are reluctant to let anyone alter it. However, I knew that if Vikram intervened, we would likely clash. I was heading to Brazil and told him to do whatever he wished with the film. Upon my return, it had been condensed to a four-hour film! I was extremely frustrated!” He later noted that after extensive editing, the film ultimately achieved its intended form.

Anurag and Vikramaditya have also collaborated on Sacred Games. Vikramaditya's most recent project was the highly praised Netflix series Black Warrant, while Anurag was last seen in the role of an actor in Rifle Club.
