Anurag Kashyap looks back

In a recent interview with Radio Nasha, Anurag reflected on the production of Satya. He remarked, “I was completely inexperienced at the time. I was in the process of learning and exploring every aspect. I often found myself in heated discussions. Ultimately, he would prevail in our debates. To silence me, he would suggest, ‘Great idea, include it in your film but remember, this is my film.’ During the filming of Manoj’s death scene, Saurabh, Makarand, Ramu ji, and I were huddled in a corner, engaged in a dispute. I disagreed with the approach taken for the death scene. It was only after seeing it on screen that I realized how mistaken I had been. At one point during our argument, Ramu said, ‘Anurag, when you direct a film, consider all the logic and the manner of a character's demise. Right now, you are not the one directing this film. Can we please proceed with the shoot?’”

There was also speculation regarding Ram Gopal commencing the filming of Satya without a finalized script.

Anurag clarified, “To the best of my recollection, we did draft something initially. However, after two days of shooting, Ramu declared that it was not the film he intended to create and discarded it. I recall that everything we had written in those early days was entirely abandoned. Subsequently, the film was developed and scripted on the fly. Each day, we would write scenes, literally placing paper on a sofa to draft the dialogues for that day.”

About Satya

Actor Manoj Bajpayee's career experienced a significant transformation with the premiere of RGV's landmark gangster film, Satya, in 1998. In this production, he portrayed the character of Bhiku Mhatre, the leader of a notorious gang operating in Mumbai. The film was re-released in theatres on January 17.

Produced and directed by RGV, Satya features a talented ensemble cast, including Paresh Rawal, Makarand Deshpande, Saurabh Shukla, Aditya Srivastava, Govind Namdeo, the late Neeraj Vora, Sanjay Mishra, Manoj Pahwa, and Sushant Singh.

The narrative centres on the protagonist, JD Chakravarthy, who relocates to Mumbai. Following a local altercation, he finds himself incarcerated, where he encounters the gangster Bhiku Mhatre (Manoj). Bhiku and his associates subsequently entice Satya to join them in a broader criminal scheme. Notably, filmmaker Vishal Bhardwaj made his debut as a music composer with Satya, and the song "Sapno Mein Milti Hai" continues to be immensely popular. The lyrics were crafted by Gulzar.
