Filmmaker Anurag Kashyap recently expressed criticism towards Brahmins regarding the censorship of his forthcoming film, "Phule," which is a biographical portrayal of social reformer Jyotirao Phule, known for his efforts against caste discrimination. This statement drew criticism from various peers in the film industry, including lyricist Manoj Muntashir. Following the backlash and threats he received, Anurag issued an apology on Tuesday, acknowledging that he had "forgotten his limits" while responding in anger.

What was the controversy about Anurag Kashyap?

 The controversy emerged when Anurag posted a series of critical remarks on social media regarding the censorship imposed by Phule. He expressed his discontent with the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) and the Brahmin community concerning the alleged censorship of the film. In response to a comment stating, "Brahmins are your father," Anurag retorted, "Brahmin pe main m*******a..koi problem (I'll pee on the Brahmins...any problem)?"

In another post, he stated, "If casteism did not exist in this country, what would have been the need for them to fight against it? Now, these Brahmin individuals either feel embarrassed, are suffering from shame, or perhaps they are living in a separate Brahmin-only India that we cannot perceive. Can someone clarify—who is truly the fool in this situation?"

Police complaints against Anurag

The A filmmaker's social media post has resulted in police complaints, alleging that he has offended the social and religious sentiments of the Brahmin community and made inappropriate remarks about them.

An FIR has been filed against Anurag Kashyap at the Bajaj Nagar police station in Jaipur, following a complaint from Anil Chaturvedi, a resident of Barkat Nagar. Additionally, a separate complaint was lodged in Indore regarding his comments.

Vijay Singh Sisodia, the officer in charge at MG Road Police Station, informed ANI, "A complaint has been submitted by Anoop Shukla against film director Anurag Kashyap for allegedly hurting the social and religious sentiments of the Brahmin community and making objectionable statements. The investigation is currently ongoing." Furthermore, Advocate Ashish Rai has called for action from the Mumbai Police Commissioner against Anurag.

Manoj Muntashir slams Anurag, filmmaker faces backlash

Taking On his official X account, Manoj Muntashir addressed Anurag in a video, stating, "If your income is limited, you must manage your expenses accordingly. Similarly, if your knowledge is lacking, you should be mindful of your words. Anurag Kashyap, given your limited income and knowledge, it is essential for you to exercise restraint in both areas."

He further criticized Anurag for his purported comments, remarking, "You lack sufficient substance to tarnish the esteemed legacy of Brahmins."

A segment of the audience expressed disapproval of Anurag's statements. One individual commented, “Such language is inappropriate. Please concentrate on filmmaking.” Another tweet stated, “Critique is acceptable, but do not compromise your standards.” Additionally, someone remarked, “You took it too personally. Focus on the film and its themes, rather than making it personal.” Another user questioned, “Why would you say something like that? This was quite crass, even for you!”

Anurag's pens apology notes

Last week, Anurag issued an apology, clarifying that it was not directed at his post but rather in response to a comment that was "taken out of context" and the "growing animosity." He stated, "No action or speech is worth your daughter, family, friends, and colleagues receiving rape and death threats from the leaders of cultural values."

On Tuesday, he posted a lengthy message on Instagram, expressing regret for his negative remarks about the Brahmin community made in response to "someone's inappropriate comment" during a moment of anger. The filmmaker acknowledged that his statements had disappointed both his peers and family.

In part of his message, he wrote, "In my anger, while responding to someone, I overstepped my boundaries and spoke poorly about the entire Brahmin community. This is a community that has included many individuals in my life, who continue to be a significant part of it. Today, I have caused them pain. My family is also hurt by my words. Many intellectuals, whom I hold in high regard, are affected by my anger and my manner of speaking." The director concluded by promising to prevent such incidents in the future and to work on managing his anger.

The On April 7, the creators of Phule obtained a 'U' certificate from the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC), which mandated several alterations, including the removal of terms like 'Mang', 'Mahar', and 'Peshwai'. Additionally, the depiction of a 'man carrying a broom' was substituted with a scene of 'boys throwing cow dung balls at Savitribai', and the phrase '3000 saal purani gulami' was revised to 'Kai saal purani'.

Following the release of the Phule trailer on April 10, some members of the Brahmin community expressed concerns regarding the representation of their community in the film. Originally set to premiere on April 11, the film's release has now been postponed to April 25. Directed by Ananth Mahadevan, the movie features Pratik Gandhi as Jyotirao Govindrao Phule and Patralekhaa as Savitribai Phule.
