Anurag Kashyap: I Remain in Bollywood; I Can Create Hindi Films from Anywhere

After 3 decades in films, Anurag Kashyap is far from pleased with how the industry has gone from being a place to tell stories, to only chasing box office numbers. So disillusioned is the filmmaker-actor with the culture in Bollywood that he’s moved lock stock and barrel out of Mumbai and found a home in the south of the country. It’s also where he has been finding work as an actor, whether it is the Tamil film, Maharaja, Rifle Club in Malayalam, Dacoit in Telugu or, now, the upcoming Kannada film 8, which brings him to Sandalwood.

During a media interaction on the occasion of the official announcement of "8," a sports drama directed by actor-filmmaker Sujay Shastry, Anurag clarified that his relocation from Mumbai does not hinder his involvement in the Hindi film industry. He stated, "I have not left Bollywood; I can produce Hindi films from any location," emphasizing his desire for audiences to concentrate on the art of storytelling.

At the title launch, Anurag remarked, "There was a time when filmmakers invested everything into their projects; they would mortgage their homes and pour their heart and soul into the creation. Today, films are often produced by individuals with MBA degrees. This marks a significant shift from the Bollywood of the past to the present." He further noted, "Storytelling holds immense significance, and cinema serves as a powerful medium for this purpose. When we share narratives that have yet to be explored, they can inspire and reflect societal truths, offering thrilling experiences."

Anurag is scheduled to commence filming for the project titled "8" in April. Although the production team has not disclosed specifics regarding his character, it is reasonable to speculate that he may portray a coach, especially considering the film's focus on sports. Sujay has indicated that the life lessons conveyed by Anurag's character will be a significant aspect of the narrative.

At the launch event for "8," Anurag expressed that the film centers on the theme of second chances in life. Marking his debut in Kannada cinema, he conveyed his aspiration to match Sujay's acting prowess and expressed his appreciation for being cast in a role that does not involve portraying a psychopath once more.
