Director Anurag Kashyap has expressed his dissatisfaction with the Bollywood film industry. Previously, he announced his intention to depart from the Hindi film sector in order to pursue filmmaking in the South. In a recent interview with Forbes, he elaborated on how Indian theaters have negatively impacted his movie-watching experience, leading him to primarily view films at film festivals.
What Anurag said
In response to inquiries regarding his views on the future of independent cinema, Anurag expressed, "I have ceased to contemplate the future… I can discuss the challenges I encounter, as well as those faced by other filmmakers, and I can propose potential solutions that I have identified, but I am unable to predict what lies ahead. There are numerous emerging trends, such as short-format films… My aspiration to become a filmmaker stems from my passion for experiencing films on the big screen. I prefer attending film festivals to avoid the interruptions caused by intermissions at home, along with the incessant commentary about what is detrimental to health or the mind. Such distractions significantly detract from my enjoyment of the cinematic experience."
‘I know that I want to make films all my life’
He proceeded to discuss his role and how he can assist emerging filmmakers in realizing their projects. "What if everything goes awry, what if I encounter failure? I would return to the very place I started. I remember that first day in the city, aspiring to create films, standing on the street with a suitcase in hand. However, I do not wish to regress any further. My passion for cinema is unwavering, and I am determined to pursue filmmaking for the entirety of my life. The various endeavors I undertook along the way were aimed at supporting other filmmakers with unique perspectives. The presence of more diverse voices will ensure my continued ability to create films. The greater the number of independent voices, the more feasible it will be for me to produce my work. When I began, there was no foundation to build upon," he remarked.
Anurag's most recent film, Kennedy, garnered acclaim at the Cannes Film Festival, yet it has struggled to secure a release in India. Since then, Anurag has not directed another film but has appeared in several, including Leo, Maharaja, and Viduthalai Part 2.
