He lauded the Malayalam film Manjummel Boys and announced his intention to depart from Mumbai and move to the South.
Anurag Kashyap says Bollywood is obsessed with remakes
Anurag Kashyap recently expressed his thoughts on Bollywood's fixation with remakes. He commended the film Manjummel Boys and mentioned his intention to relocate to the South soon.
Kashyap noted the challenges he faces in pursuing innovative projects, as such endeavours often come with financial implications that lead producers to prioritize profit margins.
He remarked, “From the outset of a film's development, the focus shifts to its marketability. This diminishes the joy of the filmmaking process. Consequently, I plan to leave Mumbai next year for the South, seeking an environment that fosters creativity. Otherwise, I fear I will grow old in disappointment. I find myself increasingly disillusioned and repulsed by the prevailing attitudes within my own industry.”
Anurag commended Manjummel Boys, asserting that such films would not emerge from Bollywood but would rather be remade if they achieved success. He remarked, “The prevailing attitude is to replicate what has already proven successful. There is a reluctance to explore new concepts.”
Regarding Manjummel Boys, the film premiered in theatres on February 22 of this year and quickly gained significant popularity at the box office across Kerala and other southern states. Now, more than two months post its theatrical release, it has made its debut on OTT platforms, currently available for streaming on Disney+ Hotstar.
Directed by Chidambaram, this survival drama features a talented ensemble cast, including Soubin Shahir, Sreenath Bhasi, Balu Varghese, Ganapathi S. Poduval, Lal Jr., Deepak Parambol, Abhiram Radhakrishnan, Arun Kurian, Khalid Rahman, and Shebin Benson.
Based on a true incident that took place in 2006, Manjummel Boys is about a group of friends from Kerala who decide to travel to Kodaikanal in Tamil Nadu. While exploring the caves known as Gunaa Caves, one of them falls into a deep pit.
