Animal: Sandeep Reddy Vanga Reveals Why Bobby Deol’s Abrar Was Deaf and Mute in Ranbir Kapoor's Film
16 days ago | 5 Views
It has been more than a year since the premiere of Ranbir Kapoor's film Animal, yet it remains a subject of considerable discourse. Featuring Kapoor in the role of a relentless individual striving to gain his father's affection and validation, the film ignited extensive discussions regarding its violent motifs and the complex nature of its characters. Despite the controversies, Animal emerged as one of the highest-grossing films of 2023.
Nevertheless, the movie left viewers with numerous unresolved queries, potentially suggesting the possibility of a sequel or encouraging fans to engage in their speculation. One of the most significant enigmas was the reason behind Bobby Deol's character, Abrar Haque, being mute. Director Sandeep Reddy Vanga has now provided clarity on this enduring question.
Sandeep Reddy Vanga on Bobby Deol’s Abrar Haque
Directed and written by Sandeep Reddy Vanga, Animal boasts an impressive ensemble cast, featuring Ranbir Kapoor, Bobby Deol, Rashmika Mandanna, Triptii Dimri, and Anil Kapoor. In the film, Bobby Deol portrays Abrar Haque, a formidable antagonist intent on eliminating Ranbir’s character, Ranvijay, at all costs. However, fans were left questioning the filmmakers' decision to render Abrar both mute and deaf, particularly following his striking introduction.
In a recent discussion with Game Changers, Vanga elaborated on the rationale behind this creative choice. The director recognized for his audacious storytelling, expressed his desire to deviate from the conventional hero-villain archetype commonly found in cinema.
He highlighted that in the majority of films, the protagonist and the antagonist often engage in intense phone confrontations, trading dramatic insults and threats throughout the narrative. Vanga aimed to steer clear of this trope in his second Hindi film, prompting him to make an unconventional decision regarding Abrar’s character.
"While I was developing Bobby Deol’s Abrar Haque for Animal, I contemplated, ‘What if he were mute?’ I then realized that this would also imply he is deaf. The concept of a deaf and mute antagonist facing off in the climax was immensely thrilling to me. That’s when I decided to pursue this direction," Vanga elaborated.
Bobby Deol on His Limited Screen Time in Animal
Bobby Deol responded to fans' concerns regarding his minimal screen presence in the film Animal. He acknowledged his desire for more scenes but also conveyed his appreciation for the chance to collaborate with Sandeep Reddy Vanga, even if his involvement lasted just 15 days.
I recognized that I was presented with a significant opportunity—I had a span of 15 days for filming, collaborating with Sandeep Reddy Vanga. I anticipated that the experience would be remarkable, which is why I expressed my enthusiasm. My intention was not to seek additional screen time. However, in responding to that inquiry, it inadvertently hurt me. Such occurrences are not uncommon, Deol remarked.
