Angelina Jolie's Oscar Hopes Dashed: The Heartbreak Behind Maria

Angelina Jolie's Oscar Hopes Dashed: The Heartbreak Behind Maria

Angelina Jolie commenced the awards season with great expectations regarding her performance in the biopic Maria; however, her experience soon took an unforeseen direction. In spite of her initial enthusiasm, the actress encountered disillusionment after being bested by Demi Moore for a Golden Globe, not receiving a nomination for a SAG Award, and ultimately being overlooked at the Academy Awards. An insider close to Jolie disclosed to In Touch that this sequence of disappointments left the actress feeling both stressed and perplexed.

Jolie is surrounded by ‘air of sadness’

An insider disclosed to the publication, “Firstly, what troubles Angelina is her nearly complete absence of humour or lightness when discussing this film,” as well as her unsuccessful awards campaign funded by Netflix. The insider elaborated, “When this is coupled with the film itself, it creates an atmosphere of sadness and gloom surrounding her that is not enjoyable.”

She had hoped that her portrayal in Maria would mark her significant return to the spotlight after dedicating months to prepare for the role, which included singing. However, the insider indicated that her serious demeanour may have negatively impacted her chances for the award, allowing critics to closely examine her performance. The source remarked, “She possesses a sombre personality, and while Maria Callas' music is uplifting, her narrative is not.”

Furthermore, they noted, “Angelina was also disadvantaged by the fact that she did not perform her own singing. Although Rami Malek managed to succeed six years ago with Bohemian Rhapsody, the sentiment has changed, and awards voters now prioritize authenticity above all else.”

Jolie’s comparison to Timothee Chalamet

The source indicated that the music genre has recently gained popularity, which contributed to Maria being easily surpassed in the award race. An insider conveyed to the news outlet, “There is also the issue of comparisons to Timmy Timothee Chalamet in A Complete Unknown. He performed his own singing in that film and excelled, impressing even his most ardent critics. Timothée is scheduled to appear on SNL next week to perform live as Bob Dylan.”

Nevertheless, the favourable attention surrounding Chalamet ultimately diminished Jolie’s chances for an Oscar. The source remarked, “It appears that the new benchmark for musical biopics, including those about opera singers, is that one must perform their own singing. Angelina and her team are acutely aware of this, regardless of the substantial financial support they provide for her otherwise exceptional performance. Timmy's achievements, along with the authentic singing by the women in Wicked, have overshadowed her efforts.”

While the source emphasizes the strong support Jolie received from Netflix, it is evident that there was also considerable organized resistance to her nomination this year. As previously reported by In Touch, several prominent stars, including Jennifer Aniston, Reese Witherspoon, Annette Bening, Laura Dern, Mary McCormack, Andrea Riseborough, and notably, Jolie's former husband Brad Pitt, have united in support of Nicole Kidman and Moore’s Oscar ambitions.

This coalition has reportedly sought to undermine Jolie’s prospects. A second source informed the media outlet, “Jen’s group has demonstrated the ability to influence the nomination process.” Meanwhile, the first source acknowledged, “Her enthusiasm for this awards campaign has waned because she recognized the unattainable standard to which she would be held. This was destined to fail from the outset.”
