Angela Bassett has reaffirmed her now-famous response to losing the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress to Jamie Lee Curtis in 2023. In a recent interview with Town & Country, published on Thursday, the "Black Panther" star reflected on that moment, standing by her "disappointed" expression despite the criticism she received at the time. Two years later, Bassett elaborated on her genuine reaction and articulated why she believed there was no need for her to apologize.

In her remarks regarding the Oscars incident, Bassett expressed to Page Six, “I found it intriguing.” She further explained, “It is intriguing that I would not be permitted to feel disappointment over an outcome that I believed I had earned. I take pleasure in celebrating others. Yet, in that moment…” The actress continued, “I have dedicated myself: invested time and produced quality work consistently. I did not perceive that as a favour; rather, I considered it a standard expectation.”

In 2023, she received a nomination for the Oscars in the Best Supporting Actress category for her performance in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. Nevertheless, Curtis secured the Oscar in that category for her role in Everything Everywhere All At Once, which also represented her inaugural Academy Award victory.

The controversial Basset’s Oscar reaction

As Curtis was declared the winner in the category, the camera shifted to capture the reactions of the other nominees, which included Kerry Condon, Hong Chau, and Stephanie Hsu, alongside Bassett. The 66-year-old, however, displayed a clear sense of disappointment regarding the outcome.

In January 2024, Bassett received an honorary Academy Award in recognition of her significant contributions to the film industry. During her acceptance speech, the actress known for her role in How Stella Got Her Groove Back took a moment to honour the trailblazing Black actresses who paved the way for her, such as Ruby Dee, Diahann Carroll, Cicely Tyson, and Rosalind Cash.

She said, “It was standing on their strong, spiritually fortified shoulders that I often was sustained, and I thank them for every sacrifice, doubt, disappointment, rejection, and triumph that I know they experienced along the way,” as reported by People magazine. She stated, “Because had it not been for their resilience, continuing to fight through their fears and the uncertainty and their willingness as they fought for every role, I would not have had a representation of what was possible for me.”
