Andrea Hewitt Reflects on Divorce Decision After Witnessing Husband's 'Helpless' Condition

Former Indian cricketer Vinod Kambli's wife, Andrea Hewitt, has publicly shared her perspective for the first time regarding her husband's ongoing battle with alcohol addiction. In a recent interview, the former model disclosed that she had initiated divorce proceedings against Kambli but later retracted her decision upon witnessing his vulnerable condition during his struggle with alcoholism, which has necessitated rehabilitation on at least 14 occasions.

Andrea is Kambli's second spouse, following a previous marriage to Noella Lewis that ended in divorce. The left-handed batting veteran fell for Andrea after spotting her on a 'Tanishq' advertisement billboard, leading to their marriage in a private civil ceremony in 2006.

Earlier this month, Andrea was seen accompanying her husband to the 50th-anniversary celebration of Wankhede Stadium, organized by the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA). During the event, she assisted Kambli in walking to receive an award from former Indian captain Sunil Gavaskar. A week later, on January 19, the couple marked Kambli's 53rd birthday at a hospital in Bhiwandi, Thane district, alongside hospital staff and family members.

In a conversation with freelance journalist Suryanshi Pandey on her podcast, Andrea revealed her thoughts of leaving Kambli, stating that she had even filed for divorce but ultimately withdrew it due to her deep concern for his well-being.

"He would be utterly helpless if I were to leave him. He resembles a child in many ways, which pains me. I often find myself worrying about him. I would not abandon a friend, and he means even more to me. There were times I considered walking away, but then I would think: Has he eaten? Is he resting properly? Is he alright? I felt compelled to check on him and realized he truly needs my support," she expressed.

It is important to note that after 17 years of marriage, issues arose in February 2023 when Andrea filed a police complaint against Kambli, alleging domestic abuse. Reports indicate that the former cricketer had thrown a cooking pan handle at her while intoxicated, resulting in a head injury.

'My son Christiano understood everything...'

The couple is blessed with two children: a son named Jesus Christiano Kambli and a daughter named Johanna.

Andrea acknowledged the challenges she faced in caring for both children during Kambli's health issues, noting that her son provided significant support during that time.

"Often, I had to remind myself that I was both 'Papa' and 'Mom' in our family. My son Cristiano grasped the situation completely; he never troubled me and was attuned to the emotions I displayed," she remarked.

Christiano, who was just four years old when he first comprehended the circumstances at home, expressed his concern for his mother's mental well-being.

"I made an effort to understand what was happening. I aimed to support her mental health and bring her some joy. I also look after him (father)," he stated.
