Ananya Panday, one of Bollywood’s brightest young stars, has opened up about her highly anticipated debut series, Call Me Bae, streaming on Prime Video. In an exclusive interview with OTTplay, the actor discussed her decision to lead the light-hearted and uplifting series, a departure from her intense roles in her previous OTT ventures, Gehraiyaan and Kho Gaye Hum Kahan.
Plot overview of Call Me Bae
The series follows the journey of Bella ‘Bae’ Chowdhary, an heiress-turned-hustler who embarks on a transformative adventure after losing her wealth. As she navigates the high-pressure world of Mumbai’s newsrooms, Bae discovers that her street smarts and flair are far more valuable than her privileged upbringing, while also coming face-to-face with her true self.
Ananya Panday's take on the series and characters
Panday, who plays the lead role of Bae, expressed her excitement about stepping into the lighter, more fun-filled series. “I think, actually, the best part of the show for me was that it's not only about Bae. Bae is there and she's the protagonist, but she's only Bae because of the people around her and the people she comes across. I really like the roundness of every character. Like every character is the way they are because of some reason, which you will find out and it's very tough. I've not seen it so often, but every character has an arc. They have like a journey. They start from somewhere and they end somewhere,” she said.
She emphasised how the interconnectedness of the characters enriches the series, adding, “Everything gets tied so beautifully. There's no, like, messy endings. Everything is actually really brought to a very lovely conclusion, and there's just a beautiful arc. So I think my favourite part was all the characters and the quirks that they have.”
Fun peparture from intense roles
For Panday, Call Me Bae presented a welcome change of pace after tackling more intense roles. “Definitely for me, this felt like something fun and happy and breezy, not just for me to act in, but I think for people in general to watch, because a lot of the content out there right now is dark and it's more serious, which is also amazing. I love watching that kind of stuff, but I think it's also nice to balance it out and have something like chill and fun that you can just happily watch and not have to, like, think too much,” she revealed.
This refreshing change, coupled with the vibrant, multi-layered characters, makes Call Me Bae a standout series in a landscape filled with more intense, dark content. The show is poised to strike a chord with audiences looking for something light-hearted and entertaining while still offering depth through the journeys of its diverse characters.
Call Me Bae is streaming on Prime Video, promising a breezy yet impactful ride through Mumbai’s bustling newsrooms, where Bae finds her voice and her true self.
