Ananth Mahadevan jokes about Kiran Rao's Laapataa Ladies winning IIFA awards, saying, "A rose is still a rose, no matter the name"

Kiran Rao’s touching film Laapataa Ladies made a big splash at the IIFA Awards in 2024, winning several categories. Filmmaker Ananth Mahadevan couldn’t help but poke fun at the accolades, referencing his own 1999 movie Ghoonghat Ke Pat Khol. Here’s what he had to say.

Ananth Mahadevan's jab at the success of Laapataa Ladies

Ananth posted a poster for his movie Ghoonghat Ke Pat Khol on Facebook, subtly highlighting that the film recently snagged some awards at the IIFA, including Best Original Story. He said, “GHUNGHAT KE PAT KHOL just swept the IIFA awards, taking home the BEST ORIGINAL STORY! Sure, it had a different title, but a rose is still a rose, no matter what you call it!”

He also shared a YouTube video showcasing the accidental bride swap that happens at a train station. When a fan claimed that Aamir Khan’s production company, Aamir Khan Productions, removed all versions of the film from YouTube, another fan asked where they could find it. He responded by sharing the video link and noted, “Only 1 hour available.”

This isn’t the first time Ananth has pointed out the similarities between his work and Laapataa Ladies. Back in May of last year, he told Mid-Day, “It feels like too much of a coincidence. I’ve watched Laapataa Ladies, and both the start and several scenes are quite alike,” highlighting various moments from the film that he found to be similar.

Here's a little bit about Laapataa Ladies

Laapataa Ladies, known internationally as Lost Ladies, features a cast that includes Nitanshi Goel, Pratibha Ranta, Sparsh Shrivastava, Chhaya Kadam, and Ravi Kishan. The plot revolves around two brides who are mistakenly switched on a train.

The film premiered at the 48th Toronto International Film Festival in 2023 and stirred up some debate when it was chosen as India's entry for the Best International Feature Film category at the 97th Academy Awards, beating out Payal Kapadia’s All We Imagine As Light. However, it ultimately did not receive a nomination.
