Amar Singh Chamkila: Imtiaz Ali hopes National Awards will 'look kindly' on Diljit Dosanjh-starrer

Filmmaker Imtiaz Ali's movie, Amar Singh Chamkila, received a thunderous response upon its OTT release. It was the director's first feature to be released on a streaming platform. It premiered on Netflix on April 12, 2024. Starring Diljit Dosanjh in the titular role, the movie was honoured as The Breakout Film of the Year at the 15th IFFM (Indian Film Festival of Melbourne). Now, in an interview, Imtiaz hopes the National Awards will look kindly on his directorial project.

Imtiaz Ali spoke to PTI and addressed the initial doubts surrounding direct-to-OTT movies' eligibility for the National Awards. The filmmaker hoped that his movie Amar Singh Chamkila would get recognition at the National Awards.
"There was confusion about whether films that are released direct-to-digital will be allowed to participate in National Awards but I think there's a verdict on that now which is in favour of direct-to-digital films. I'm hoping the National Awards will look kindly on Amar Singh Chamkila," Imtiaz told the news agency.
The filmmaker added he liked that Amar Singh Chamkila is made out of metro and mini-metros. In his opinion, he feels the story goes into the heartland. "I'm hopeful that the population of the country will appreciate that," added Ali.
About Amar Singh Chamkila
Helmed by Imtiaz, Amar Singh Chamkila featured Diljit playing the role of the legendary Punjabi singer, Amar Singh Chamkila. The singer was 27 when he was shot dead along with his wife Amarjot in 1998. Parineeti Chopra essayed the character of Chamkila's wife Amarjot in the Imtiaz Ali directorial.
