The 2008 film Ghajini stands as one of the most significant achievements in Aamir Khan's career. It not only emerged as the highest-grossing Indian film of that year but also marked the first Bollywood production to surpass ₹100 crore in domestic earnings. During a promotional event for the film Thandel, featuring Naga Chaitanya and Sai Pallavi, producer Allu Aravind took the opportunity to propose the idea of Ghajini 2 to Aamir.

At the event, Aravind recounted that while filming Ghajini, Aamir had confidently asserted to him and producer Madhu Mantena that it would be the first Indian film to achieve ₹100 crore in box office revenue. He stated, “During the production, he challenged Madhu and me, claiming that this film (Ghajini) would be the first to reach ₹100 crore.” When Aamir expressed doubt, suggesting it was out of character for him, Aravind clarified that the comment was made ‘late at night.’
Aamir humorously remarked that akin to his character in the film, he experienced ‘short-term memory loss,’ to which Aravind responded that they were merely ‘hoping’ for such an outcome. He continued, “Ghajini is the inaugural film to join the 100 crore club; it made history. My aspiration is to create another… now the target has escalated to 1000. Therefore, I wish to produce a thousand crore film with him, potentially Ghajini 2.” Aamir responded affirmatively and noted that there has been considerable discussion online regarding the sequel.
Recent work
Aamir was last featured in the 2022 film Laal Singh Chaddha, a Hindi adaptation of the 1994 Hollywood classic Forrest Gump. In 2023, he took on the role of producer for his ex-wife Kiran Rao’s film Laapataa Ladies. The actor is also set to appear in Sitaare Zameen Par, which he is producing. There are rumours that he will make a cameo in Lokesh Kanagaraj’s Coolie, starring Rajinikanth in the lead role. Aravind’s film Thandel is scheduled for theatrical release in Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam, and Hindi on February 14.
