The Bhool Bhulaiyaa franchise has achieved remarkable success, particularly following the release of its second and third instalments over the past four years, featuring Kartik Aaryan. However, the roots of this franchise trace back to the original film, which debuted in 2007 under the direction of Priyadarshan, with Akshay Kumar in the role of the primary ghostbuster. In a recent interview with Pinkvilla, Akshay discusses the reasons for his absence from both the sequel and the third instalment.
What Akshay said
During the segment dedicated to fan interaction, one audience member expressed his admiration for the Bhool Bhulaiyaa franchise but mentioned that he had not watched the second and third instalments due to Akshay's absence from those films. He inquired about the reason for Akshay's non-participation, to which Akshay simply smiled and replied, “Beta mujhe nikaal dia tha (I was removed). That's it.”
The same fan further questioned Akshay regarding his reduced involvement in comedic roles over the past decade. Akshay acknowledged this in Hindi, stating, “That's true. I've done less comedies. I've done a lot of social films, whether it's Sarfira (2024), Airlift (2016), Rustom (2016), Padman (2018), and Toilet (Ek Prem Katha, 2017). Because I wanted to do it. I'd done a lot of comedies in the past. Every person has a mindset at a particular time, what he wants to do. So I wanted to do that. But now, I've signed about 2-3 comedies which I'm filming, like Bhooth Bangla, Welcome (to the Jungle), and Housefull (5).”
About the Bhool Bhulaiyaa franchise
The Bhool Bhulaiyaa franchise, under the production of Bhushan Kumar's T-Series, began with the 2007 film featuring Vidya Balan in the role of the witch Manjulika. The sequel, which premiered in 2022, was directed by Anees Bazmee and introduced a new cast, including Kartik Aaryan as the ghostbuster Rooh Baba, alongside Kiara Advani and Tabu portraying the twin witches Manjulika and Anjulika. In the third instalment released last year, Kartik Aaryan reprised his role, as did Vidya Balan from the original film. Additionally, Madhuri Dixit and Triptii Dimri joined the ensemble cast.
In a separate development, Akshay Kumar has collaborated once again with Priyadarshan for the horror comedy Bhooth Bangla, which is scheduled to be released in theatres next year.
