After five years of legal disputes in court, actor and Member of Parliament Kangana Ranaut and lyricist Javed Akhtar have successfully reached a favorable settlement regarding their defamation lawsuits against one another. Kangana shared this positive development with her followers on Instagram, accompanied by a joyful photograph.

A happy settlement

“Today, Javed ji and I have amicably settled our legal issue (defamation case) through mediation. During this process, Javed ji has shown great kindness and generosity, and he has also agreed to compose songs for my upcoming directorial project,” Kangana stated in her post.

What was the feud all about?

The legal battle commenced following an interview Kangana gave to a news channel in 2020, shortly after the passing of actor Sushant Singh Rajput. In her remarks, Kangana alleged that Akhtar had urged her to apologize to her co-star Hrithik Roshan, who had filed a lawsuit against her in 2016, seeking an apology after a public disagreement regarding their purported relationship.

“Once, Javed Akhtar invited me to his home and warned me that Rakesh Roshan (Hrithik Roshan's father) and his family are very influential. He said that if I did not apologize to them, I would have nowhere to turn. He threatened that they would have me imprisoned, and ultimately, the only outcome would be my destruction… that I would take my own life. These were his exact words. He raised his voice and yelled at me. I was trembling in his house,” Kangana recounted during the interview. In response, Javed filed a defamation lawsuit against her, which continued for several years. He asserted in court, “Everything Kangana stated in the interview is false and nothing but falsehood.”

“I had informed her about the purpose of the meeting over the phone. I did not invite her to discuss trivial matters such as the weather, political issues, or the American elections in 2016,” he explained. Although he did not know Kangana personally, he expressed that he had always appreciated her work as an actress, but during the meeting, he shifted the conversation once he realized she was unwilling to heed his advice.
