Adhi Dha Surprisu Stirs Controversy: Women’s Representation in Music Under Question

Tollywood has succeeded in producing not just one, but two songs that have caused significant discomfort among internet users, all within a mere three months. Competing with Urvashi Rautela and Balakrishna’s Dabidi Dibidi, the latest entry is Adhi Dha Surprisu from Venky Kudumula’s film Robinhood, featuring Nithiin and Sreeleela. The song, which includes Ketika Sharma, has prompted calls for Shekhar Master to step down due to its perceived 'vulgar' choreography.

Adhi Dha Surprisu from Robinhood draws ire

Following the release of the music video, composed by GV Prakash Kumar, on Monday evening, viewers have expressed strong opinions regarding the song, which is rich in allegorical content. Sung by Neeti Mohan and Anurag Kulkarni, with lyrics by Chandrabose, the video features a particularly controversial moment where an oiled Ketika adjusts her skirt's waistband, which many interpret as a double entendre, leading to criticism and objectification.

One outraged Instagram user criticized Sekhar's choreography, stating, “Sekhar master, please retire. It’s a film, and while audiences expect commercial elements and romantic scenes, what you are presenting is neither romance nor commercial; it is simply distasteful.”

Many others echoed similar sentiments, with comments such as, “This type of song and choreography should be banned,” and “Why do directors, producers, and performers continue to endorse such content?” Another user remarked, “Objectifying women in songs and then questioning why society is deteriorating day by day.” One individual questioned, “Who decides on these kinds of songs and dance moves?” while another succinctly described the content as “vulgar.” A film enthusiast concurred, stating, “What is labeled as choreography is merely vulgarity.”

The Indian entertainment industry appears to be increasingly engaged in a competition to surpass one another in terms of vulgarity. Observers have noted that the focus seems to be on how far creators can push the envelope regarding embarrassing content, often prioritizing shock value over meaningful substance. This sentiment was echoed by a user on Threads, who criticized Sekhar Master for his recent work. One comment highlighted the troubling trend, stating, "Cinema is destined to deteriorate further. Women are not being depicted as individuals; rather, they are being reduced to mere objects."

Not the first time

This is not the first instance in which Sekhar has faced criticism for his choreography. The choreographer, known for his contributions to popular films such as Iddarammayilatho, Nannaku Prematho, and Khaidi No 150, recently came under scrutiny for the song "Dabidi Dibidi" from Daaku Maharaaj, which received significant backlash due to its portrayal of Balakrishna and Urvashi.

In 2024, Sekhar worked on successful projects like Guntur Kaaram, The GOAT, Devara: Part 1, and Pushpa 2: The Rule. However, his choreography for the film Mr. Bachchan, featuring Ravi Teja and Bhagyashri Borse, once again sparked controversy for blurring the lines between entertainment and objectification.
