24 days ago | 5 Views
Actor Adarsh Gourav has experienced a remarkable evolution from a child star to a prominent figure in internationally recognized films. The star of The White Tiger is set to appear in Reema Kagti's Superboys of Malegaon, which is scheduled for a wide theatrical release this week after garnering acclaim at film festivals around the globe. In anticipation of the film's debut, Adarsh engages in a conversation with HT regarding the evolving perception of Indian cinema on the international stage.
On smaller films' reach overseas
Regarding the international reach of smaller films, Superboys of Malegaon made its debut at the 2024 Toronto International Film Festival last year, joining the ranks of numerous Indian films showcased at esteemed international film festivals recently. Reflecting on this transformation, Adarsh remarks, "Twenty to twenty-five years ago, if an Indian film was featured at a film festival, it went largely unnoticed. However, with the rise of marketing, this has changed. It is essential for prominent filmmakers to support smaller projects. Only then can we cultivate an environment where such films receive greater promotion."
On Alien Earth co-star's Lagaan obsession
On the topic of his co-star's admiration for Lagaan in Alien Earth, the actor acknowledges the increasing global interest in Indian cinema, encompassing both mainstream and independent productions. He shares a personal anecdote, stating, "While working on Alien: Earth this year, I noticed that many people were more informed about Indian films. My co-star, Essie Davis, a celebrated Australian actress, has a deep affection for Lagaan. She would frequently bring it up, asking numerous questions about it as if I had been part of its production."
Adarsh humorously remarks, "She had a phonetic understanding of the songs, so she kept humming O Ri Chhori and Ghanan Ghanan. It was quite amusing to witness an Australian woman engaging in this. However, it is remarkable. I genuinely believe there has been a significant change in public perception." Directed by Ashutosh Gowariker, Lagaan premiered in 2001 and featured Aamir Khan alongside Gracy Singh, Elizabeth Shelley, and Paul Blackthorne. It stands out as one of the few Indian mainstream films to gain recognition in the West, having received an Oscar nomination for Best Foreign Film.
Adarsh's upcoming work
In terms of Adarsh's forthcoming projects, Alien: Earth is an anticipated science-fiction series crafted by Noah Hawley, serving as a prequel to Ridley Scott's Alien. The cast includes Adarsh and Essie, along with Sydney Chandler, Alex Lawther, and Samuel Blenkin.
Superboys of Malegaon features Adarsh, Vineet Kumar Singh, Shashank Arora, Anuj Singh Duhan, and Riddhi Kumar. Produced by Zoya Akhtar, Farhan Akhtar, Reema Kagti, and Ritesh Sidhwani, the film is set for a global theatrical release on February 28.
