On Saturday, actor Unni Mukundan remarked that cinema does not promote drug abuse; rather, it reflects the challenges present in society. He commended a female actor for her recent remarks opposing drug use on film sets, calling it a "positive development." He stressed the importance of collective reflection on the rising instances of drug use and crime in a state known for its high literacy rate.
Unni Mukundan defends film industry
Unni spoke to reporters in Kochi during an event, stating, “It is inaccurate to assert that the increase in drug abuse and crime rates can be attributed to cinema. The influence of cinema on society is not that significant.”
He went on to inquire, “What channels allow these illegal substances to enter Kerala? How do they find their way into schools? Who are the individuals facilitating their distribution? These are questions I have been contemplating since my youth.” Unni stressed the importance of heightened awareness and action from authorities, educational institutions, and parents in addressing the escalating drug crisis.
He pointed out that cinema is frequently regarded as a "soft target" and should not bear the sole blame for the surge in drug abuse. The actor highlighted that while the participation of film personalities in this matter is minimal, it attracts more scrutiny due to their visibility in the entertainment industry. “The drug issue permeates all sectors,” he reiterated.
Shine Tom Chacko's arrest and bail in drugs case
The response from the well-known actor Marco came after actor Vincy Aloshious lodged a complaint with the Film Chamber, alleging that actor Shine Tom Chacko displayed "inappropriate behaviour" towards her on a film set while purportedly under the influence of drugs.
On Saturday, Shine voluntarily reported to the police concerning a drug-related investigation, following approximately four hours of interrogation regarding an incident in which he allegedly tried to escape from a hotel in Kochi during a narcotics operation. He was subsequently granted bail later that evening. Shine's visit was prompted by a police notice seeking clarification about his attempt to flee the hotel room.
