Since his debut with the 2001 film Aks, Abhimanyu Singh has made a name for himself not just in Hindi cinema but also in Telugu, Tamil and a few Kannada films. The actor is now pumped to debut in Malayalam too with Prithviraj Sukumaran’s Mohanlal-starrer L2: Empuraan, summing up the shooting experience for it as ‘unbelievable’.
Abhimanyu tells Hindustan Times all about his Malayalam debut ahead of its release on March 27. He also talks about his upcoming films in Hindi and Telugu, and more.
Abhimanyu Singh talks about making his debut in Malayalam cinema
When you ask Abhimanyu why he agreed to be part of Empuraan, he shares that he has always valued Malayalam films for their strong storytelling. “There was a period when people thought Malayalam cinema lacked big budgets. But you can't argue with the fact that they consistently produced amazing films filled with creativity,” he says. He goes on to mention, “Empuraan is set to shift that perception since it’s one of the most expensive projects from the industry. Honestly, it felt more like I was working on a Hollywood film than a Mollywood one!”
For Abhimanyu, collaborating with Prithviraj and Mohanlal was an added perk. “I’ve seen Lucifer (2019), and I really believe Prithviraj is an incredibly skilled actor and director. His talent as an actor really enhances his directing abilities. Working with him is a breeze since he has a clear vision of what he wants. He hits the mark every single time. And teaming up with Mohanlal was just as amazing. It was a truly professional and fantastic experience for my debut,” the actor shares.
Catching up with Pawan Kalyan after so many years
Abhimanyu made his debut in Telugu cinema with the 2010 bilingual film Rakta Charitra, but he really gained recognition for his role as the antagonist Siddhappa Naidu in the 2012 hit Gabbar Singh, which was inspired by Salman Khan’s Dabangg. Fast forward over ten years, and Abhimanyu is teaming up again with his Gabbar Singh co-star Pawan Kalyan for Sujeeth’s new gangster movie, They Call Him OG.
The actor shares that even after all these years, he doesn’t notice much change in Pawan, except that he’s definitely busier now as the Deputy Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh. “It was really nice to catch up with Pawan after so long. I’m just looking forward to finishing the final schedule,” he mentions, adding, “As a person, he hasn’t changed much, aside from being swamped with political duties. He’s working hard to balance his film career and politics. I can’t say too much about my role in the film, but it’s unlike anything I’ve done before.”
Abhimanyu has also completed filming and dubbing for Shravan Tiwari’s Cocaine, a project he co-produced with his wife, Sargam Singh. He’s also set to star in Rajkumar Santoshi’s Lahore 1947 alongside Sunny Deol and Preity Zinta, which is produced by Aamir Khan. “I’m playing the main villain in Lahore 1947, and it’s such a fantastic role. Cocaine is a gritty film that dives into the dark side of Mumbai, featuring the mafia and the police. But more than anything, I’m really excited to return to Hyderabad because it feels like a second home to me, and I adore my fans there,” he concludes.
