Playback singer Abhijeet Bhattacharya has criticized composer AR Rahman, alleging that he often makes renowned composers, singers, and songwriters wait for extended periods at his studio, sometimes without even meeting them. The singer expressed his astonishment at the apparent disregard for these artists, many of whom hold the prestigious Padma Shri and Padma Bhushan awards.

Abhijeet reflects on his experience with Rahman

In an interview, Abhijeet recounted his experience while recording the song "Ae Nazneen Suno Na" for the 1999 film Dil Hi Dil Mein," which featured an entire score by Rahman. He noted that during the session, he observed several prominent artists, including those honored with Padma Bhushan and Padma Shri awards, waiting for nearly three hours on a bench downstairs for Rahman to arrive.

Abhijeet remarked, “What is surprising is that I saw Padma Bhushan and Padma Shri awardees sitting on a bench downstairs... Rahman, sir, did not come down for two or two-and-a-half hours. Everyone was chatting to pass the time. I kept checking my watch, but eventually, Rahman did not come down.”

I performed the song, and his assistant recorded it before I departed. This occurred with the song "Ae Nazneen Suno Na." You must understand that this reflects the respect afforded to recipients of the Padma Shri and Padma Bhushan awards. 

The Padma Shri and Padma Bhushan are the fourth and third-highest civilian honors in India, awarded by the government to distinguished individuals across various fields. AR Rahman himself was honored with the Padma Bhushan in 2010.

AR Rahman and Abhijeet Bhattacharya have collaborated on only one song together, "Ae Nazneen Suno Na," from the 1999 film Dil Hi Dil Mein."
