Abhijeet Bhattacharya used to be pretty vocal about singers doing gigs at weddings, but now he's flipped the script. He actually promised to perform at one of the contestant's weddings! This surprising turn happened when he joined the New Year special episode of Indian Idol 15.
Abhijeet Bhattacharya's kind act
The special New Year episode is set to air this weekend on Sony Entertainment Television. It will feature Abhijeet alongside Lalit Pandit, Sadhna Sargam, Sumati Bhattacharya (Abhijeet's wife), and actress Preeti Jhangiani.
During the show, contestants will pay homage to love songs. At one point, contestant Manasi asked Abhijeet what he thinks about singers performing at weddings, referencing a video where he expressed his disapproval of it.
Abhijeet took the question in stride, saying, “How much are you all going to scold me? Here’s the truth -- I didn’t sing at my own wedding because the vibe just wasn’t right. And in that moment of frustration, my father-in-law didn’t even give me money for my suit! Weddings should have heartfelt songs, but I’ll definitely sing at your wedding with a band.” He added with a laugh, “I, Lalit, Vishal, and Shreya will be the ones singing.”
There was a moment when Abhijeet was really taken by Chaitanya's performance of the song Ole Ole, and he even gave him a standing ovation.
Sharing a memorable story about the song, Abhijeet recalled, “The film is called Yeh Dil Lagi, and I was there to sing the title track. Udit (Udit Narayan), Lata (Lata Mangeshkar), and I— the three of us—performed this song together. Udit and I went for the recording, and Adi and Yash ji were present too. Then Dilip Sen told me, 'Abhijeet, go and record another song.’ I’m not sure why he asked me to do that, but the tricky part with this song was similar to what you experienced. It has to be sung in one breath, or you lose its charm. Remember, a song truly belongs to the music director, not the star."
After that, he sang a few lines from his track. When discussing Sneha's take on the song Bahon mein Chale aao, Abhijeet remarked, “Only those with immense luck are gifted with music, and in this case, you can’t really call it 'nepotism'.”
