Aamir Khan's Philosophical Take on 'Laapataa Ladies' Oscars Exit: 'Don't Take It Too Seriously'

Laapataa Ladies, which was India's official entry for the Oscars 2025, didn’t make it to the shortlist. Aamir Khan, the film's producer, shared his thoughts on this in an interview with ABP Live. He mentioned that it’s not something to stress over and offered his perspective on why the film didn’t get selected.

Laapataa Ladies missed out on the Oscars 2025

During the Ideas of India Summit 2025, Aamir was asked why Laapataa Ladies didn’t make the Oscar shortlist for 2025.

He replied, "There was no lack on our part. But we need to keep in mind that when a film enters the Foreign Language category, about 80-85 countries submit their best films. That makes the competition incredibly fierce. The competition in the Foreign Language category is actually tougher than in other Oscar categories."

Aamir thinks it’s not a big deal

He also mentioned, "We need to realize that there are other movies out there that might be better, or at least, the members liked those more. That doesn’t mean our film isn’t good; it just shows that the members preferred those other 15 films. This whole thing is super subjective—how can you even compare? Everyone has their own tastes. So, it’s not something to take too seriously. I definitely don’t."

Laapataa Ladies Overview

Laapataa Ladies, directed by Kiran Rao and produced by Aamir Khan Productions, is a comedy-drama featuring Nitanshi Goel, Pratibha Ranta, Sparsh Shrivastava, Chhaya Kadam, and Ravi Kishan. The film revolves around two newlywed brides who accidentally get swapped during a train ride to their husbands' homes. While it didn't do well at the box office, it found a solid fanbase on OTT platforms and became a hit among critics and viewers after its Netflix release in 2024.

When it was announced as India's official entry for the Oscars 2025, many fans were thrilled. However, some were let down, wishing that Payal Kapadia's All We Imagine As Light would have been chosen instead.
