Aamir Khan recently shared some insights about the beginning of his career following his big break with Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak back in 1988. During a chat with writer and lyricist Javed Akhtar at the launch of Aamir Khan: Cinema Ka Jadugar, a unique film festival hosted by PVR INOX, Aamir reflected on the missteps he took in those early days.

After Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak shot him to fame overnight, Aamir shared that he received around 300-400 film offers. Not fully grasping the weight of committing to so many projects, he ended up signing multiple films at once. “Back in those days, actors juggled 30 to 50 films at the same time. Anil Kapoor had the least with 33 films. Seeing that, I thought it was a good idea to sign up for 9-10 films all at once. Unfortunately, none of the directors I had always wanted to work with came to me with roles. It was only when the shoots started that I realized how big of a mistake I had made. I was working three shifts a day and wasn’t happy at all. I would go home and cry,” he admitted.

In the following years, the consequences of those choices became clear as Aamir's films started flopping one after another. Movies like Love Love Love, Awwal Number, and Tum Mere Ho tanked at the box office. Aamir reflected on his mindset during that period, saying, “The media labeled me a ‘one-film wonder,’ and honestly, I can’t blame them for that. By that point, I was convinced that not only had those three films failed, but the next six would be even worse. I could see my career spiraling downwards. I felt trapped in a swamp, unable to escape.”

Aamir made a major comeback with his hit film Dil in 1990. Throughout the 90s, he solidified his status as one of the leading stars in Bollywood, and in the 2000s, he went on to deliver a string of massive hits. The Cinema Ka Jadugar festival is happening to celebrate his 60th birthday later this week.
