Aamir Khan has expressed his concerns regarding Hindi filmmakers, suggesting that they have lost touch with their cultural origins. He attributes this disconnection as a significant factor contributing to the underperformance of Hindi films at the box office, in contrast to the financial success of films from the South.

Aamir Khan on Bollywood

On Sunday, Aamir participated in a press conference for PVR-INOX's special film festival, "Aamir Khan: Cinema Ka Jadugar," which celebrates his significant contributions to Indian cinema. During the event, he articulated that the success of South Indian cinema can be attributed to its directors' ability to engage with profound emotions in their narratives, a quality that he believes has been overlooked by filmmakers in the northern regions.

Javed Akhtar, the esteemed lyricist and screenwriter who moderated the discussion, inquired about the reasons behind the successful reception of South Indian films in theatres, contrasting it with the challenges faced by Hindi films.

Aamir responded, stating, "One contributing factor may be that writers and directors in Hindi cinema have been attempting to cater to an audience with more refined tastes, thereby losing touch with their foundational roots. There exist both elevated and more primal emotions. While revenge is a powerful emotion, doubt is comparatively subtle and less compelling. Emotions such as anger, love, and revenge are prevalent. In Bollywood, we are opting to explore various facets of life rather than focusing on broader themes."

Aamir Khan on why South Films are working

The actor, who is also the proprietor of Aamir Khan Productions, asserts that the South Indian film industry is providing greater opportunities for large-scale films through single-screen theatres, while Hindi filmmakers are primarily targeting audiences that frequent multiplexes, which constitute a smaller demographic of viewers.

“With the advent of multiplexes, there was a significant discussion within the film industry regarding the evolving audience, suggesting that the multiplex audience was distinct. This dialogue gained considerable momentum. Subsequently, a specific genre of films emerged, referred to as multiplex films. There was a clear distinction made between multiplex films and single-screen films. The films from the South are typically categorized as single-screen films, characterized by their mass appeal and impactful storytelling. I believe that Hindi filmmakers may have shifted their focus more towards creating multiplex films,” he remarked.

Aamir Khan and Javed Akhtar are set to collaborate on the actor's forthcoming film production, Lahore 1947, which stars Sunny Deol.
