Aamir Khan Opens Up: 'I Was Like Devdas' After My Divorce from Reena Dutta

Aamir Khan shared his experience of going into seclusion for more than a year after his divorce from his first wife, Reena Dutta. In a chat with Instant Bollywood, he reflected on how he turned to drinking during that time, often finishing a whole bottle in a single day.

What Aamir mentioned

In the chat, Aamir shared, "When Reena and I first split, I was in a state of mourning for about 2-3 years. I wasn’t working or even looking at scripts. I spent a lot of time alone at home, and for around a year and a half, I drank heavily. You’d be surprised to hear that I used to be a teetotaler. After the breakup, I felt lost and didn’t know what to do. I struggled to sleep at night, which led me to start drinking. I went from being someone who never touched alcohol to downing a whole bottle in a day. I was like Devdas, truly! Just like him, I was on a path of self-destruction. I lived that way for a year and a half, trapped in a deep depression."

He continued by saying, "You need to recognize how significant it was for you. Acknowledge that what you once had is no longer there. Also, appreciate how wonderful it was when it was part of your life and how much you'll feel its absence when it's gone."

Aamir and Reena Dutta tied the knot in 1986 and have two kids, Junaid Khan and Ira Khan. They divorced in 2002. Aamir then married Kiran Rao in 2005, but they separated in 2021 after 15 years together. They share a son, Azad, who was born via surrogacy.

Recently, the actor introduced his new girlfriend, Gauri Spratt, at his pre-birthday celebration. The couple spoke with the media and shared that they had been together for 18 months at that time.
