Aamir Khan's 2016 film Dangal stands as one of the most significant successes in Indian cinema. This sports drama, inspired by the true story of wrestler Mahavir Singh Phogat and his daughters, Geeta and Babita, captivated viewers around the globe. Recently, however, the actor disclosed that he initially felt unprepared to undertake the role and speculated that Shah Rukh Khan and Salman Khan might have encouraged director Nitish Tiwari to jeopardize his career.
During a podcast with Just too Filmy, Aamir was questioned about his project selection process. The 60-year-old actor explained that he relies on his instincts rather than considering audience preferences or current trends.
Aamir doesn't believe in trends
Many individuals in mainstream cinema assess audience preferences and tailor their work accordingly. This response is understandable, given the significant effort, time, and financial resources invested; the fear of audience rejection is a legitimate concern. However, as a creative individual, I do not share this mindset. Whenever a compelling story resonates with me, I dedicate myself fully to it, trusting that the audience will respond similarly to my interpretation of the narrative, as a fellow human being, the actor expressed.
Aamir wondered if Shah Rukh and Salman sent Nitish to end his career
In an engaging anecdote regarding Dangal, the actor recounted, "When Nitish Tiwari approached me to discuss the film's narrative, I expressed my enthusiasm, stating it was an incredible project that I wanted to be part of, but I couldn't at that moment. Having just completed Dhoom 3, I was in peak physical condition with a body fat percentage of 9.67, and here I was being asked to portray a 55-year-old father of four daughters," he remarked with a chuckle.
He humorously speculated whether Shah Rukh and Salman had conspired to suggest Nitish cast him as a 60-year-old in an effort to nudge him out of the industry. The actor confessed that he requested the Dangal director to return in 10 to 15 years, to which Nitish surprisingly acquiesced.
The outcome, as we all know, is now part of cinematic history. Dangal emerged as the highest-grossing Hindi film of the year, amassing ₹2000 crore globally.
Aamir is set to appear next in Sitaare Zameen Par, a spiritual sequel to Taare Zameen Par. This film, his first in three years, is scheduled for release later this year, although an official date has yet to be confirmed.
