Upon the theatrical release of Laapataa Ladies in December 2023, director Kiran Rao disclosed that her former husband and the film's producer, Aamir Khan, expressed a strong interest in portraying the police officer in the movie. Aamir even went through the audition process for the part, which ultimately was awarded to Ravi Kishan. Recently, the footage of Aamir's audition has surfaced online, leading to widespread acclaim for Kiran's decision.

Aamir's new YouTube channel, Aamir Khan Talkies, released the audition tape on Wednesday. In the video, Aamir appears in a police uniform, sporting slicked-back hair and chewing a paan, which reflects the character's distinctive style. He delivers several lines from the film while seated at a desk. The audition reel also includes some bloopers and features Aamir's interpretation of the character SI Shyam Manohar, showcasing various mannerisms and body language that he incorporated into the role.

The internet reacts

Following the video's release on social media, numerous fans commended Aamir's interpretation of the character; however, the majority believed that Ravi Kishan was a more suitable choice for the role. One commenter stated, "Aamir sir is not suited for this role. Ravi Kishan performed significantly better." Another remarked, "While Aamir is undoubtedly a talented actor, Ravi Kishan truly excelled in that role; it was designed for him."

Many expressed concerns that the character's development would have been too foreseeable had a prominent figure like Aamir taken on the part. One individual noted, "If Aamir had portrayed that character, it would have been overly predictable." Another added, "If Aamir had assumed the role, the element of surprise regarding the bad cop's transformation would have been diminished. RK did an excellent job, so there are no regrets."

Some critiques of Aamir's audition were particularly harsh, with one individual commenting, "This performance pales in comparison to Ravi Kishan's."

At the time of the film's release, director Kiran Rao mentioned that Aamir Khan had expressed interest in portraying the character of Shyam Manohar and had auditioned for the role. However, he decided to withdraw after witnessing Ravi Kishan's screen test, recognizing that Kishan was more suited for the part.

Laapataa Ladies features newcomers Sparsh Srivastava, Nitanshi Goel, and Pratibha Ranta, and tells the story of two brides who are mistakenly exchanged in rural India during the 1990s. The film received widespread critical acclaim and recently garnered 10 awards at the IIFA Awards, including Best Supporting Actor for Ravi Kishan.
