Bench Life is Sony Liv's new series that will premiere on September 12, 2024. Akanksha Singh plays the main lead and she speaks to us about her role, working with a women director, her favorite scene in the series, doing fewer films, and future projects in Telugu. Read on.

How did you bag this offer?

I was supposed to do a project for Niharika Konidela. But as Covid-19 happened, things fell on the back burner. But in 2023, I got a call from the director Masana regarding Bench Life. I got a narration and loved the whole concept of Bench Life and the way techies lead lives under such huge pressure.

Which aspect of Bench Life attracted you the most?

My character had the most weight. My character is written in such a way that even when I am not in the scene, the discussion is always about me. The role had romance, and strong emotions which I truly believe in as a person. So, there was no looking back and I thoroughly enjoyed the role of Eesha.

Tell us more about your role in Bench Life?

I play Eesha, who is a senior software engineer. She has a lot of issues going on within but handles them with ease. She is the apple of Balu's eye and is a very dignified person. I am like Eesha in real life and portray today's women who want to achieve big in life. The character suits my personality and I had a ball shooting for the series.

Any favorite scene in the series?

Yes, there are many but this one emotional scene in the last episode where I breakdown is my favorite. It had something to do with my father whom I lost recently. When I was doing that scene, tears rolled out automatically and I could not continue to shoot for the rest of the day. My character has so many such emotions which will resonate with many.

What was it like to work with stalwarts like Rajendra Prasad?

It is always high when you work with such great actors. Both me and Prasad Garu have some very emotional scenes in the series and I have learned a lot from him. The emotions of my character are brought out by this presence and it will be so good to see it on screen.

Working with women producers and directors?

Niharika Konidela has produced the series and she has gone all out to make things work for us. Coming to my director Manasa, when women directors are helming a project, they always pen stories that have strong emotions and character arcs for women. The same is the case with Bench Life. Be it my character, or Ritika Singh's role, Manasa is quite clear what she wanted from us and showcased me in the best way possible.

Is being married the reason for acting in fewer films?

No, that is not the reason at all. Male actors also get married and continue to work. The same is the case with women also. I can easily handle both my personal and professional life in a very easy manner. There is a myth that married female actors do not prefer certain roles. I feel only when you approach us, one will know what our thought process is. I am gone for OTT, films, and any other medium. Times have changed today and one should start thinking in a broad-minded manner.

What can one expect from Bench Life?

Bench Life is a slice-of-life web series that is relatable to one and all. Each character showcased in the series is one among us. So, all those who watch the series will connect to our characters big time. Also, there is a hilarious comedy, emotions, and inspiring moments that make this series a must-watch.

Future projects?

I am almost done with the film Sasthipoorthi which will be out soon. I am gone for new-age OTT projects. I feel Bench Life will showcase a new side of my performance. I feel the character of Eesha will resonate with many and will also bring me more projects in the days to come.
