AR Rahman employed Artificial Intelligence to replicate the voices of two deceased artists, Bamba Bakya and Shahul Hameed, for the track "Thimiri Yezhuda" featured in Rajinikanth's film "Lal Salaam," set for release in 2024. Regarding the growing trend of utilizing AI in music production, Rahman expressed in a PTI interview that its application must be 'regulated' to prevent potential disorder.

What Rahman said

During the discussion, Rahman expressed his concerns, stating, “I am uncertain about the implications of belling the cat. Some songs are extremely inappropriate, yet they are performed by well-known artists. This situation requires regulation; otherwise, it could lead to disorder.”

He further remarked, “There are both positive and negative elements, and we should leverage the positive aspects to empower individuals who have not had the opportunity to realize their visions. However, misusing these elements can be detrimental. It is akin to combining poison with oxygen and inhaling it. There must be guidelines in place, similar to the ethical standards and behaviors expected in society; this also applies to conduct within the software and digital realms.”

The composer had earlier clarified his use of AI to replicate the voices of two deceased singers for a track in Lal Salaam. He noted that consent was obtained from the families of the iconic singers, and they were compensated accordingly.

On the professional front, AR Rahman is set to compose music for Mani Ratnam's upcoming film, Thug Life. The movie, featuring Kamal Haasan, is scheduled for release in theaters across the country on June 5.
