British singer Ed Sheeran is extending his musical reach in India through his Mathematics tour. On Wednesday, he performed in Chennai, where he was joined on stage by the esteemed Oscar-winning composer, AR Rahman, as a special guest. The two artists captivated the audience with a remix of Ed's "Shape of You" and Rahman's "Urvasi," although their performance was momentarily hindered by a malfunctioning microphone.

Shape of Urvasi

Shortly after the concert concluded, Ed Sheeran took to Instagram to share a video from the event, featuring AR Rahman on stage. "Will you make some noise for AR Rahman?" he exclaimed, prompting the audience to erupt in enthusiastic cheers. Rahman, dressed in his signature all-black attire and sunglasses, joined Ed for a duet. However, it appeared that there was an issue with Rahman's microphone, rendering him inaudible for a significant portion of the performance. Ed stepped in to support him, taking over the vocals while Rahman contributed to the song "Urvasi." Despite the technical difficulties, the fans continued to cheer for both artists.

In response to their collaboration, fans of Ed and Rahman inundated the comment section with admiration. One fan remarked, "Goddamn, I will say it again! Aadhar Card for Ed Bhai." Another commented, "Witnessed this iconic moment at the concert. This one is for the books." A third fan noted, "That aura when a global artist mentions the name AR Rahman."

While the majority of comments on social media were overwhelmingly positive, a few individuals felt that the performance could have been improved. One tweet stated, "Irundhalum nalla practice pani irukalam (Even then, we could have practiced well)."

Ed's Indian adventure

Sheeran, who is presently engaged in the India segment of ‘The Mathematics ( -=÷x) Tour’, had the opportunity to meet Rahman and his son A R Ameen prior to his performance in Chennai.

Ameen, also a vocalist, posted a collection of photographs featuring himself, Sheeran, and Rahman on his Instagram account on Tuesday, expressing his admiration for Sheeran with numerous heart emojis in the caption.

In one of the images, Sheeran is seen alongside Rahman and Ameen. Another photograph captures the British singer-songwriter taking a picture of Rahman as he diligently works on his music in the studio.

Additionally, Sheeran shared a video on Instagram showcasing him performing his romantic ballad “Perfect” with the students from Rahman’s KM College of Music & Technology.

"Singing 'Perfect' with the incredible choir at @kmmcchennai here in Chennai today, wowsers (flip sideways for the full experience gang) (sic)” he wrote in the caption accompanying the video.

Earlier, a fan club dedicated to the singer-songwriter released a video of him receiving a head massage in Chennai.

“Ed getting a head massage in Chennai,” the caption stated. In the video, Sheeran can be heard humorously remarking, “This is abuse.”

He is set to conclude his tour, organized by AEG Presents Asia and BookMyShow Live, with a performance in Delhi-NCR on February 15.
