The Oscar season is approaching, and following extensive deliberation regarding the nominations over the past several months, the 97th Academy Awards ceremony will soon be available for live viewing on OTT platforms in India. This esteemed awards event is scheduled to take place on March 2, 2025, in the United States, which translates to a live stream in India on March 5, 2025, early in the morning, via the newly integrated JioHotstar.

Dolby Theatre to host the 97th Academy Awards

The Academy Awards ceremony, organized by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS), is set to take place at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, Los Angeles. This event will honor films from the year 2024 across 23 categories, with the prestigious Oscars being awarded during the ceremony. Comedian and podcaster Conan O'Brien will serve as the host for the first time.

Wicked and The Brutalist both garnered ten nominations apiece, while Emilia Pérez took home thirteen.

Historic moment for non-English films

Emilia Pérez has set a new record with twelve nominations, surpassing the previous high held by Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (2000) and Roma (2018) for the most Oscar nominations in a non-English language category. Additionally, Karla Sofía Gascón, a Spanish actress, has made history as the first openly transgender performer to receive an acting nomination for her role in the film. Notably, it is unprecedented for two films to be nominated for both Best Picture and Best International Feature Film in the same year; Emilia Pérez and I'm Still Here mark the tenth and eleventh non-English language films to achieve this distinction.

Timothée Chalamet has become the youngest actor to receive two nominations for Best Actor since James Dean in 1957, achieving this at the age of 29 and breaking Dean's record. The body horror parody The Substance, directed by Coralie Fargeat, has made her the ninth woman to earn a nomination for Best Director. Furthermore, I'm Still Here has made history by being nominated for Best Picture in a language other than Portuguese. Flow and Flee (2021) have both received nominations for Best Animated Feature and Best International Feature Film, making it the second animated feature to achieve this.

First-time and multiple Best Director nominees

The eighth individual to achieve four nominations in a single year was Jacques Audiard for his work on Emilia Pérez, followed closely by Sean Baker, who became the ninth to reach this milestone with his film Anora. The Best Director category features James Mangold (for A Complete Unknown), Brady Corbet (for The Brutalist), Fargeat, and Audiard, with Mangold, Baker, and James Corbet being newcomers in this category. Notably, Mangold, Fargeat, and Brady Corbet have each received three nominations.

In 1998, a completely new set of nominees emerged for the directing category. It has not occurred since 1978 that every film featuring a Best Actress nominee also secured a nomination for Best Picture. Andy Nelson, with a total of 25 nominations, ranks second only to John Williams, who has received 54 nominations, for the highest number of nominations among living individuals. His nomination for Wicked further cements his reputation as one of the Academy's most celebrated figures.
