The prestigious 70th National Film Awards was announced today (August 16). The announcement that Saudi Vellakka, director Tharun Moorthy's second film, has won Best Malayalam Film and Best Singer (Female) makes Malayalis happy. Based on a true story, the film centres on a legal case and the significant costs incurred by the parties involved due to the nation's legal system's protracted verdict-giving process.
Saudi Vellakka streaming on Sony LIV
Aside from Malayalam, the movie is accessible on Sony LIV in Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, and Marathi. In an exclusive interview with OTTplay earlier, Tharun stated that the film had a packed house at a multiplex even on the day of its OTT release. After being released both theatrically and digitally, Saudi Vellakka garnered a great deal of praise for both its storyline and performances.
All about Tharun Moorthy’s Saudi Vellakka
The story of Saudi Vellakka revolves around an elderly woman named Aisha who, in a moment of rage, strikes a young child in a seaside village called Saudi. Her neighbour incites the boy's family to press charges against the woman, and as more people become involved, things quickly spiral out of control. This forces Aisha's family to fight the case, but they had no idea that it would also have a significant impact on each of their lives, as the court took more than a decade to issue its ruling.
Important parts are played by Lukman Avaran, Sujith Sankar, and Binu Pappu in this movie, which hit theatres in December 2022. Devi, who plays Aisha in the film, makes an outstanding debut. The drama is quite moving. Devi Varma won the Kerala State Film Award for Best Character Actress last year. Dhanya Ananya, Gokulan, Riya Saira, and Remya Suresh appear in supporting roles. Saudi Vellakka, like his previous film, depicts the predicament of those who are waiting on the legal system to provide them with justice. Tharun’s debut film, Operation Java, is streaming on ZEE5.
