Directed by A. Bhimsingh and written by Javar Seetharaman, Kalathur Kannamma is said to be inspired from the 1960 Chinese film Nobody's Child. The film revolves arounds a couple, a wealthy landlord's son and poor farmer's daughter who get separated, leaving their child to grow up in an orphanage. While Kamal Haasan played the child, Gemini Ganesh and Savitri Ganesh played the couple.

T. S. Balaiah, S. V. Subbaiah, Javar N. Seetharaman, and Manorama among others were part of the cast. The song Ammavum Neeye featuring a young Kamal is an iconic number from the film.

Recently, the sets of Thug Life, the upcoming film of Kamal Haasan, celebrated the landmark moment. The film's director, Mani Ratnam and his team threw a surprise celebration bash for Kamal Haasan as the latter arrived to the sets.

Kamal Haasan who was last seen in Indian 2, is currently working in Thug Life with Mani Ratnam. The actor also has a film with Anbariv duo in the pipeline. Kamal Haasan also recently stepped down as host of Bigg Boss Tamil due to cinematic commitments.
