The BAFTA Film Awards 2025 nominations were revealed on Tuesday night during an online event hosted by Mia McKenna-Bruce and Will Sharpe. The film All We Imagine As Light put a smile on India's face with its nomination, but the excitement didn't stop there. Indian filmmakers Sandhya Suri and Karan Kandhari also got nominated for their films, Santosh and Sister Midnight, respectively.
Both of them earned spots in the Outstanding Debut by British Writer, Director or Producer category since they produced their films in the UK. Sandhya Suri is up for Santosh alongside James Bowsher and Balthazar de Ganay, while Karan Kandhari is in the running for Sister Midnight. They’re going head-to-head with another filmmaker of Indian descent, Dev Patel, who received a nod for his directorial debut, Monkey Man. The competition also includes Luna Carmoon for Hoard and Richard Peppiat for Kneecap.
Santosh and Sister Midnight
Karan Kandhari is an Indian filmmaker who kicked off his career with Sister Midnight, a mix of horror and comedy. The film got a boost from a million-pound grant from the British Film Institute in 2022 and features a talented cast including Radhika Apte, Ashok Pathak, Chhaya Kadam, and Smita Tambe. It made its debut at the Cannes Film Festival last year and has been getting a lot of positive buzz.
On the other hand, Santosh is a crime drama that marks Sandhya Suri's first time in the director's chair. Produced by British filmmakers Mike Goodridge, James Bowsher, Alan McAlex, and Balthazar de Ganay, the film is set in rural India. It stars Shahana Goswami as a widow who takes over her late husband's police job and dives into a chilling murder case. Sunita Rajwar also stars in the film, which was the UK's submission for Best International Feature Film at the 97th Academy Awards.
