A recent study conducted by Dr. Qiuyi Wang and Dr. Zi Wang from Osaka University raises intriguing questions about age perception. The researchers have created a model that assesses an individual's true age by analyzing a steroid hormone present in the bloodstream. Interestingly, the findings reveal that the biological age indicated by these steroid hormones may not align with the chronological age reflected on a birth certificate or the age one appears to be.

Findings of the study:

The research, published in Science Advances, employed artificial intelligence to analyze blood samples and ascertain the biological age of individuals. For an extended period, scientists have suspected a discrepancy between chronological age and the physiological aging process. They have also noted that individuals exhibit varying aging patterns, which aids in identifying age-related health issues and formulating appropriate treatment strategies.

The study involved 148 participants aged between 20 and 73 years. Blood samples were collected, consisting of five drops from each participant, and the levels of 22 distinct steroid hormones were measured in these samples. An advanced method known as liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry was utilized to identify the steroid hormones present. Additionally, variations in hormone patterns based on gender were observed.

Stress can age the body faster.

Is stress aging you?

Dr. Qiuyi Wang, a co-first author of the research, stated, "Our bodies depend on hormones to sustain homeostasis, which led us to consider using these as primary indicators of aging." The researchers discovered that cortisol, known as the stress hormone, significantly contributes to accelerated aging in the body. Consequently, the authors of the study affirmed that stress can indeed accelerate the aging process.

Professor Toshifumi Takao, a corresponding author and an authority in analytical chemistry and mass spectrometry, remarked, "While stress is often discussed in broad terms, our findings offer tangible evidence of its measurable effects on biological aging."
