Undergoing a rhinoplasty, commonly referred to as a nose job, may necessitate specific precautions when travelling by air. According to medical professionals, taping the nose during flights is often advised to maintain the stability of the nasal structure and minimize swelling. In a recent post on Instagram, Dr. Ricky Brown, a plastic surgeon based in the United States, elaborated on the importance of taping the nose following such a procedure. 

In response to a video posted by a woman demonstrating the taping of her nose while on a flight, Dr. Brown provided insights into why individuals who have undergone rhinoplasty may experience swelling at elevated altitudes. The woman captioned her in-flight video, “POV: You have a nose job, so you have to tape your nose whenever you fly.”

Taping can help with swelling

Dr. Ricky Brown explains that fluctuations in air pressure during flights can lead to the expansion and contraction of nasal passages. To alleviate discomfort, he suggests using tape to stabilize the nasal structure.

He elaborates, stating, “This phenomenon occurs due to changes in cabin pressure at higher altitudes, which causes the blood vessels in the nose to become excessively permeable, resulting in swelling. Taping serves to mitigate this effect. It is possible to experience nasal swelling for up to a year following rhinoplasty.”

In his commentary, he notes, “In the early stages post-surgery, particularly during the first few months, swelling may be more noticeable while flying. Taping can assist in managing this swelling…”

For individuals who have undergone rhinoplasty and plan to travel by air, it is crucial to adhere to the surgeon's recommendations regarding the application of tape on the nose. The physician may specify the duration for which the tape should be worn during the flight and will provide instructions on how to apply it properly to ensure both security and comfort.
