When Tradition Turns Toxic: Study Exposes Link Between Patriarchy and Abuse

The conventional gender roles established by patriarchal systems impose strict and inflexible responsibilities on both men and women. Men are typically regarded as the primary earners and dominant figures, whereas women are often expected to be compliant, submissive, and solely responsible for caregiving tasks. Such a framework precludes the possibility of gender equality, as women are not recognized as equals. Adhering to these beliefs can lead to detrimental consequences in interpersonal relationships.

Research published in PLOS ONE indicates that men in California who maintain more traditional and less gender-equitable perspectives are considerably more prone to engage in Intimate Partner Violence (IPV).

Traditional gender roles and intimate partner violence

Men who brush off gender equality are more likely to perpetuate violence.

When an individual inflicts physical or sexual harm within a relationship, it is referred to as Intimate Partner Violence (IPV). A study conducted in California involved 3,609 male participants, with an average age of 48 years. These individuals were presented with statements such as "Men make better political leaders than women," and were required to express their agreement or disagreement. Their responses provided insight into their genuine beliefs regarding gender equality.

The findings of the survey were alarming, revealing that men who subscribed to traditional gender norms were twice as likely to engage in partner violence. The data indicated that, within the surveyed population, 1 in every 50 men in California acknowledged having committed such acts of violence in the previous year, translating to over 280,000 men.

The research established a significant correlation between adherence to traditional beliefs and the occurrence of partner violence.

The researchers emphasized the urgent need to promote gender equality. They advocated for the implementation of prevention programs aimed at fostering gender equality, particularly targeting boys and men.

Other factors that lead to IPV

Although conventional gender norms persisted, various additional risk factors such as firearm ownership, mental health issues, and substance abuse contributed to men's perpetration of partner violence.

These results underscore the necessity for integrated and thorough prevention strategies that address not only detrimental gender norms but also the wider array of risk factors linked to intimate partner violence.
