Cognitive abilities such as problem-solving and critical thinking are commonly believed to emerge during childhood, reach their highest level in one's twenties, and begin to diminish by the thirties. However, this perception does not align with actual findings.

Research published in Science Advances challenges this conventional view, indicating that literacy and numeracy skills do not begin to decline in the thirties; rather, they may continue to enhance into the forties. Beyond this point, the trajectory—whether it stabilizes or declines—varies from person to person.

What the study found

Researchers conducted a longitudinal study involving German adults over a period exceeding 3.5 years. The investigation tracked the same individuals to provide a precise evaluation of how ageing influences cognitive abilities.

The findings indicated the following:

Cognitive skills do not begin to decline in the 30s; rather, they continue to improve at least until the age of 40.

After reaching 40, literacy skills tend to remain stable, while numeracy skills may experience a slight decrease, although this varies from person to person.

Individuals who actively engage in reading and mathematical activities exhibit minimal to no decline in these cognitive abilities. These skills may continue to improve into their 50s, with negligible decline observed even by the age of 65.

How to keep your mind active and sharp with age?

A child is curious and tries many things, which keeps their brain sharp. Adults, however, fall into routines and stop challenging their minds in the same way, which can lead to a decline in cognitive skills over time.

The deterioration of cognitive abilities is not exclusively a result of ageing. While it is true that cognitive function may decline with age, this decline is often linked to a lack of mental stimulation. Individuals who remain engaged through activities such as reading, writing, and applying mathematical skills in their daily lives generally maintain superior cognitive abilities well into their later years.

Therefore, it is essential to adopt practices such as reading literature, engaging in puzzles, and writing to preserve and enhance mental acuity.
