Rather than adhering to the conventional Valentine's Day customs of romantic presents and displays of affection, Finland observes Ystävänpäivä (pronounced YOUS-ta-van-PIE-vah). Translated as "Friendship Day," Ystävänpäivä takes place on February 14 and emphasizes the importance of valuing friendships over extravagant romantic gestures. In this celebration, Finns exchange modest gifts and tokens to express their appreciation for their loved ones.

2. Japan

 In Japan, the expectations for women on Valentine's Day are quite significant, as they are anticipated to lavish their partners with chocolates and jewellery. However, this tradition extends beyond a single day. Precisely one month later, on March 14, Japan commemorates White Day, a time when men who receive gifts are obliged to reciprocate the gesture.

3. Denmark, Norway

In Denmark and Norway, Valentine's Day extends beyond romantic partners to include friends and family, who participate by exchanging "lover's cards" that range from sincere to playful. A unique custom involves sending anonymous gaekkebrev, or "snowdrop letters," which are adorned with paper cut-outs and poems, signed solely with dots. If the recipient successfully identifies the sender, they are rewarded with an Easter egg; if they fail, they must provide one instead.

4. England  

In England, Valentine's Day is marked by various customs, one of which features children singing in return for sweets, fruit, or coins. Additionally, there is a tradition of sharing Valentine buns, known as "plum shuttles," which are baked with ingredients such as raisins, plums, or caraway seeds, symbolizing a bountiful harvest.

5. Germany  

In Germany, Valentine's Day is characterized by an unusual custom where couples exchange gifts themed around pigs rather than conventional hearts. Pigs, representing both affection and desire, can be found in the form of statues, plush toys, and other items. In addition to flowers and chocolates, ginger cookies inscribed with sweet messages in icing are also favoured treats.

6. Philippines

In the Philippines, Valentine's Day is marked by a significant celebration featuring mass weddings. The government organizes extensive ceremonies that enable numerous couples to exchange vows simultaneously, enhancing the day's significance.

7. South Africa  

In South Africa, Valentine's Day is observed on February 15, commemorating the Roman festival of Lupercalia. Rather than keeping their affections hidden, some women audaciously attach the names of their admirers to their sleeves. For those who prefer a more subtle approach, expressing feelings through flowers or small gifts remains a popular option.

8. Taiwan  

In Taiwan, the act of giving flowers plays a crucial role in conveying love, with men presenting large bouquets on Valentine's Day and again on July 7. Receiving a bouquet containing precisely 108 roses is a clear indication of a marriage proposal.

9. South Korea

In South Korea, Valentine's Day marks the commencement of a month-long series of festivities. On February 14, couples engage in the exchange of chocolates and gifts. Subsequently, on March 14, they observe White Day, a celebration akin to the Japanese custom. Finally, on April 14, singles partake in Black Day, during which they savor a bowl of jjajangmyeon (noodles with black bean sauce) while contemplating their single status.

10. Brazil

In Brazil, Valentine's Day is recognized as Dia dos Namorados (Lover's Day) on June 12, the evening prior to St. Anthony's Feast, who is regarded as the patron saint of marriage. This particular date was selected as February's Valentine's Day coincides with the Carnival festivities. Similar to the United States, Brazilians celebrate the occasion by dining out, exchanging gifts, or enjoying a romantic evening with their significant other.
