The Reality of Celeb Wardrobes: Lara Dutta Warns Youth About Influencer Culture
23 days ago | 5 Views
In the most recent episode of Queenie Singh's Beauty by BiE podcast, Lara Dutta discusses the less glamorous aspects of celebrity fashion and the images portrayed on social media. The actress aims to inform the younger audience that social media influencers and celebrities frequently wear borrowed outfits, stressing that this does not reflect reality.
'Don't buy into that, it is not reality'
In a time when social media often sets unattainable standards, Lara advocates for authenticity and transparency. She stated, “I want young individuals globally to understand that many influencers, including us (celebrities) who appear to lead extraordinary lives, do not necessarily possess or have earned those things. Many actors and actresses arrive at every event, award ceremony, and significant wedding impeccably dressed. We don these stunning designer outfits, complete with elaborate hairstyles, makeup, and exquisite jewelry—yet 99.9 percent of the time, it is all borrowed and returned. Therefore, do not be misled. This is not reality... and with the prevalence of filters today, you are essentially an avatar of yourself.”
‘We need to raise our kids stronger and better’
While it may not be surprising that celebrities and influencers often wear borrowed clothing, Lara emphasized the importance of recognizing the influence this has on young minds who are actively engaged with social media. When asked about the younger generation's fixation on appearance and its effects on their mental health, Lara remarked that "everything is manipulated" in today's world.
She expressed her concerns, stating that it is alarming to witness individuals who are significant to her, particularly her nieces, as well as young boys, becoming increasingly absorbed in the instant gratification that social media offers. They seem to overlook the reality that they are the ones applying countless filters to their images. Everything appears manipulated, resembling a troubling revolution where young people have come to believe that their self-esteem is contingent upon the arbitrary and often harsh comments that may appear on their posts. This perception is what ultimately defines them. It is imperative that we cultivate resilience and a stronger sense of self-worth in our children, ensuring they possess a clearer understanding of their identity and value.
